Summer 2026 was a landmark for the care collective and June Balloon the highlight of our summer.

This video showcases the spontaneous feedback of attendees on what it means to bring back June Balloon, a beloved grassroots festival held in Brower Park in the 80s and 90s.

We were honored to commune with the people of Crown Heights. Our mission is to build networks of collective care, accountability, and power toward a world without police and prisons. We believe this mission begins with community.

I’ve noticed that all these “notable people we lost in 2025” lists have some gaps.

My dear friend Doug, whose birthday is today, is the most gentle man I’ve ever met. I knocked on his door in 2018 while campaigning for Beto O’Rourke, and, after chatting with him and his wife Ann for about an hour, drove him to vote the next day. He was into HAM radio and music—especially bluegrass—and had a massive record collection. He was funny and sweet, even from his hospital bed. Anne thinks he was a real-life angel, and I agree.

Gertha, who I just met this spring, was the epitome of a good neighbor. We struck up a conversation as we both waited at the crosswalk, and as soon as she heard I had locked myself out, insisted that I come up to her apartment (across the street from my building), where she offered me, one by one, every item of food she had in her refrigerator. I told her I wasn’t hungry a dozen times before finally taking her up on an orange, and she kept right on offering. After that, I’d bring pastries to her place on Saturday mornings and we’d chat about all kinds of things, primarily God and family.

I learned an immense amount from both of these people, and like to imagine them meeting up over pastries and pie. I think they’d get along. Thinking about Anne, and Gertha’s son, and everyone leaving 2025 without somebody they love. Here’s to holding everyone a little closer in 2026. by @bk.bap
