Seattle Cascades 2026: "Against the Grain"

Man, what a summer. Going into Spring Training, I knew this season was going to be the hardest thing I had ever done. However, I wasn't prepared for just how hard it was going to be. Our show was much more demanding than anybody was expecting. But it was also such a fun show. I'm very grateful that my stint at the Cascades was with one of their best shows of all time, and not just a boring show that I was forced to march (p.s. NOT sorry to all the oldheads for pissing you off with our show).

I feel like I learned quite a lot about playing in a line, good marching technique, and all the drumline stuff that I expected to learn. But I also learned a lot about my limits. Some days during the season were so hot, or so exhausting, or both. But I had to push through. For me, for the battery, and for the staff. There was no pussying out of anything. I think that's the skill I'm going to take with me for a long time. Being able to push through some hard shit, and maybe even find the fun in it.

All the people I made friends with, as well as MOST of the staff were all great in their own ways. I'm super grateful I got to do this thing surrounded by such awesome people. Whether you guys got annoyed by me or not, I'm grateful for each and every one of you. Thank you for making the hard times feel more worth it. Sorry I didn't tag anybody, there was wayyyy too many people to tag.

Overall, I'm super grateful I didn't give up after getting cut 3 times during audition season. I'm super grateful this group took a chance on me. I'm super grateful for all the people I met. I'm super grateful for all of the lessons I learned throughout the season. Hell, I'm even grateful for all of the tough times as they brought all the members closer together. But most of all, I'm super grateful I get to take all of my experiences from this summer and use them to shape me for the rest of my life. Thank you Cascades for such a strange and wonderful season. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

For the last time,

Drum solo prep

I am very vulnerable for posting this on Instagram. Drummers on this app are nuts and I'm struggling to play something challenging. But its okay to be honest and posting this is kind of my way of doing so. I'm not the best or most comfortable solo player on drum kit, so I usually have to prepare something for it to work out. I think this solo is a good representation of my potential. If only I didn't have to learn and practice literally every other percussion instrument 🫩✌️

A longer video than usual, but I wanted to try it out. Come to the jazz concert at 7:30 on October 11 to see something like this live!

(P.s go easy on me in the comments. I am aware that my kit playing could use some work)

First post since I left for corps! Time flies. The year has been off to an okay start. Literally no time to breathe with everything going on but that's the way we all like it (yes, we)
Jazz combo is playing "Oops" by Steps Ahead. First chorus features a 5/8 pattern over a 4/4 barline, so I figured I'd work on some comping patterns to get myself equipped. Couple small misalignments in here but I think this is "hard enough" to post.

(Also @terran_the_drummer @gd.drumz try this)

Doubles/Paradiddle Exercise
Shown to me by @ian.drums
Cascades move-ins in 1 week! I'm both stoked and terrified of what's to come this summer. Can't wait to lose a shit ton of weight and learn a lot, but I'm not ready for the amount of stress on my lower legs/back. No matter what happens, we gotta max out as much as we can (Yes WE).
I suck at paradiddle rudiments and keeping my angles consistent through them (mainly on the left), so that's what this was for. Any posts in the next week will just be focusing on my weak points going into Spring Training.
(P.S. please don't make fun of my haircut I had to before move-ins)

Doubles Rhythm Study by @sebastianplaysdrums

Probably one of the tastiest things I've played in a long while. I don't really post on Insta anymore just because it takes a lot of time and effort, but I felt like this etude was just too smooth not to post.

Rhythm X 2025 Audition Lick
Yeah this one is crazy. Let it sit in my camera for 8ish months and picked it up this past weekend to test my preparation skills. I'm happy with how I can play it for now, but there's still things I can do better. To be fair, some of the material inside of this is stupid difficult at this tempo, mainly bars 11-13. I'll say that my playing has drastically improved over the past year, and this etude kinda shows that if you've been here for a long time. Either way, still gotta keep grinding for audition season.

BD 2000 Spree

Found this in the Professor's rudimental folder and thought it looked tough. It's not that hard once you learn it, there's only like three tough spots(all the paradiddle/single stuff) that gave me some trouble. It's probably noticeable inside the video where I felt slightly uncomfortable.

I'm starting to like where my hands and taps are at compared to last year, but you know there's always gonna be more improvements I can make and that's fine. WGI audition clinics have started, and soon official auditions will roll around. Heavily banking on Veritas this season, but I'm also going to a couple more camps just for the experience. Gotta keep grinding or I'll never make a snareline before I age out!

RCC 2009 spree
There's not much to say for this one. My left hand technique has massively improved over the last couple of months. I think my right hand angle is a little off, but it's not a hard fix. WGI audition packets will be coming soon, so stay tuned to see where I end up (if I end up anywhere at all).

Infinity 2025 snare break
Havent posted in awhile, been focused on anything but social media/playing with recordings. Posting gets annoying because if a post isn't perfect, I get called out in the comments (which is fine, it just gets frustrating when I grind really hard on something and then get told that I'm wrong). Instead, I've just been hitting a lot of individual sound quality and fundamentals. I think they've definitely gotten a lot better in the past couple of months, but there's still more more work to do. I'm feeling more confident for audition season in the fall. I might actually have a shot at getting in somewhere decent as long as my fitness solidifies a little more.

Orchestral Excerpt grind 1
There are definitely some things to keep honing in on here. One of the crescendoes during the single patterns during the first rep was small compared to the second one. The accented gallop patterns weren't even between both reps(there was less contrast in the second one). If you wanna get REALLY picky, some dynamics were not perfectly even between reps, even if some dynamics aren't specified in the second half(however I don't think this is that much of an issue for now).
Other than that and the beating spots, I think this was alright.
