This was Kai Newkirk @kai_newkirk , Dr. Rabbi Zeitz, Father Robinson, and I getting arrested at a climate protest outside the White House, organized by Kai. You learn a lot about a person when you put your bodies on the line together, getting handcuffed and put in a paddy wagon in scorching heat, and taken away to jail. And I knew then how courageous, committed, and full of love for humanity Kai truly is. This coming Tuesday, Kai has an opportunity to defeat an AIPAC and corporate-backed congressman in the Arizona primary. As a thick cloud of wildfire smoke covers the D.C. sky this morning, I’m more convinced than ever that Kai is the kind of leader we desperately need in Congress. Love you Kai, you got this! 🤍 @kaiforcongressaz taken in The White House by @black.celebration

I have now called this country home for exactly 40 years. Having escaped Iran under the most horrific circumstances, I knew mine was going to be a life in exile. So, I decided early on to give back to my adopted home by doing my part to help make it a better place. For me, for my immigrant family, and for all of us. At times, that has meant being handed awards for academic excellence in the halls of Congress; at other times, it has meant getting beaten up and arrested in those very same halls for resisting unjust laws. Growing up in Iran, you quickly learn to differentiate between a people and their government, and how the interests of those in power often conflict with those of ordinary citizens. So to truly help your people, sometimes you have to fight your government and its policies. To me, that is the ultimate form of patriotism and the exact opposite of blind nationalism, which I consider a disease. As long as this country remains my home, I will continue to fight to make it a better place for our people and for people around the world 🖤

This was a senseless war, like all the wars that came before it. The billions spent on those “smart” weapons could have sent countless bright but less fortunate students to college, so they can chase their dreams. It could have provided lifesaving medical care, and more time with loved ones, for those who could not afford it. And the mothers and fathers of those beautiful Iranian schoolchildren could have had many more mornings to hold them close, to watch them grow up, fall in love and build lives of their own. Leaders declare victory. Death merchants pocket record profits. But it’s the people that always pay the heaviest price. Always.

This was @mmushinn and I protesting at George W. Bush’s first inauguration in 2001. It’s truly sobering to realize we’ve been doing this for decades and that Israel’s military machine has only grown more genocidal over the years, all while being funded by our tax dollars. However, in that same time, we’ve also built an incredible global solidarity movement for Palestine. Most importantly, we’ve triggered a political earthquake in this country. Politicians used to trip over each other to prove their loyalty to AIPAC; now, many insist they won’t accept their money and demand an end to all military aid to Israel. This shift is something to be proud of. We will not stop until Israel’s killing machine and its system of apartheid are dismantled and until Palestine is free! taken in Washington D.
