“What grows out in the woods doesn’t seem real sometimes.”

We visited longtime collaborator Darlene at her mill in the Sierra Foothills to learn how she got into milling and why she loves it so much. She’s been a friend of Black Crate’s for years, and her wood and knowledge of it continue to be part of our story.

Four generations of tools still earning their keep in the shop, wearing their nicks and worn spots as proof that they’ve been lived with and served their purpose over time. I like to imagine all the things they’ve seen over the years and always feel lucky to be able to keep them at work.

The shop has been smelling like oak lately. One of the pleasures of working with wood is the way it smells, becoming acquainted with each species’ unique scent as we work with it. by @black.crate

@black.crate has some work that has been living in our studio these past few months as part of Grain + Clay. we'd happily keep it forever.

we’ve been collaborating with Adam for years, and his pieces have become a constant in our projects. It feels very fitting to have them in our first gallery show.

he’s an incredibly talented artist and an even better human.

Adam will also have a handful of pieces in our next show, Ripples, on August 22 which we’re really excited about.

these shows are curated by us + the magical @loganlinkhome in our san anselmo studio. dm if you want the details :)

ps. adam also let us into his workshop for an interview in the journal. you can read it (and sign up for our newsletter if you’d like to hear more) through the link in our bio.
