Thank you to the mothers of SISTA GRRRL RIOT, which was established in the late 90’s to counter the lack of inclusivity in the cis white centered Riot Grrrl movement. Their work laid the foundation for the Afro Punk movement

for this sixth day of #blackhistorymonth we celebrate Alexis Brown, lead singer of metalcore band Straight Line Stitch. She auditioned and joined the band in 2003. Together they expanded their reach beyond Tennessee.

Between 2006 and 2011 they released 3 albums and an EP (including 2006 album To Be Godlike, When Skies Wash Ashore in 2008, The Fight of Our Lives in 2011, and The Word Made Flesh EP, which was paired with music video “Remission”). The Fight of Our Lives reached No. 5 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and No. 34 on the Top Independent Albums chart. Straight Line Stitch continued on to perform at festivals such as the U.K.’s Download Festival and the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.

Alexis hoped that her role in metal history would inspire other women to enter the scene. For Damnation Magazine, she says the following about being a Black woman in metal. “When I first started out, it wasn’t so much my race, but more so when I came out [in music] there wasn’t a lot of females in metal, and I think that’s what shocked a lot of people. But now… there’s a bunch of women coming up and stuff. At first… I wouldn’t say that it was an adversity, but it was more like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe that’s a chick.‘“

For Music Existence, she states “…we don’t use me being a black female in a metal band as a gimmick or think that that should make me special. We feel like we’re just like any other band. We’re just striving to get our music out.”

In a 2015 interview with Music Existence, she states about her early intro to alternative music “…I actually fell in love with KORN. That band inspired me to join a band, to front a band. I wanted to feel like Jonathan Davis; I wanted to embody Jonathan Davis.  I got on stage, and I found myself. That’s kind of how I got my own identity.”

SLS centered networking, making meaningful friendships, and connecting with fans. They opted for a down to earth, authentic approach to their music, performance and relationship building.

Yearly Pride Month reminder that this picture is not of William Dorsey Swann, U.S.’s first known drag queen, but of vaudevillian Jack Brown.

We can respect her without misrepresenting her. There are no known photos of Swann.

Queer Black people existed through the transatlantic slave trade despite being bound, dehumanized and desexualized

William Dorsey Swann, the U.S.’ first drag queen (formerly enslaved) is evidence of this and we barely know anything about her. by @blackalternativeproblems

Today would have been Marsha P. Johnson’s 80th birthday. She, like all of our recent Black trans ancestors, should still be alive today. Her legacy is one of fierce advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. She also is a prominent figure in the sex worker rights movement, given that she was a disabled sex worker throughout most of her life who materially supported the queer community with her labor. Despite being arrested over 100 times, she persisted through extraordinary circumstances.

Marsha P. Johnson was a pioneer of the Stonewall riots, which changed the landscape of the queer liberation movement forever. As she gained notoriety, she used her platform to express her frustrations about the trans exclusionary and racist nature of existing queer movement spaces, including within the Gay Liberation Front.

“In 1970, Johnson and [her close friend] Sylvia Rivera founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), ‘an organization dedicated to sheltering young transgender individuals who were shunned by their families.’ The two also began STAR House, a place where transgender youth could stay and feel safe. STAR House was of personal importance to Johnson and Rivera as they had both spent much of their youth experiencing homelessness and destitution.” (womenshistory.org)

Marsha P. Johnson’s legacy lives on through the global queer liberation movement, sex worker rights advocacy, through cultivation of healthy community, empowering Black trans women, and participation in mutual aid and resource sharing. If you would like to learn more about this revolutionary activist, I would suggest reading “Marsha: The Joy and Defiance of Marsha P. Johnson,” by Black trans luminary Tourmaline. by @blackalternativeproblems

We are nearing 10k and will soon expand off this platform. This page (started by a queer Black Native riot grrrl) uplifts radical Black outcasts and alternative folk. We recognize and appreciate the OG pioneers of the Afro-punk / Sista Grirl scenes, and shoutout everyone maintaining that energy.

You won’t find worship of white musicians here, because there’s plenty of pages already doing that. No whitewashing, no coddling, no mercy.

The seriousness of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the ongoing genocide and criminalization of diaspora peoples indigenous to the African continent is HEAVILY OVERLOOKED in alternative spaces, and it leaves us unsafe, silenced, and vulnerable to a number of abuses.

If any of this makes you uncomfortable, find spaces more palatable to you, because the intensity will ramp up on this page. We’re expanding our team and about to dig into the nitty gritty. If you have issues that you need uplifted, a site and a form will be up within the next six months to catalog our community’s experiences. by @blackalternativeproblems
