When French-Senegalese hotel owner, Meryanne Loum-Martin opened @jnanetamsna in 1990, the ‘boutique hotel’ concept hadn’t existed in Marrakech. She didn’t just break a glass ceiling as an African women; she built an entirely new category in Moroccan hospitality.

This is more than hospitality.
It’s about ownership. The diaspora doesn’t just participate in markets. We create them.

Wow…

We got Spanish author and activist, Desirée Bela-Lobedde, on an episode and she addresses the structural erasure of colonial history in European education systems.

When foundational history such as Spain’s colonial presence in Equatorial Guinea is omitted from national curricula, it creates a persistent blind spot around modern systemic racism and historical accountability.

We unpack this in its entirety. Link in bio for the full episode!

Tango has BLACK ROOTS 💃🏽

The word “tango” itself, along with its core rhythmic structures, traces back to African communal gatherings (candombe) brought to the Río de la Plata region by enslaved Africans.

Despite attempts to erase these contributions over time, the history of Tango is fundamentally rooted in Black expression, innovation, and culture.

Beyond what is commonly told in history books, Afro-Argentine women have shaped the nation’s past, present, and political identity. 🇦🇷✨

In this episode with Afro-Argentine activist, Julia Cohen Ribeiro, she shared two iconic figures who redefined Black history in Argentina:

⚔️ María Remedios del Valle (“La Madre de la Patria”)
Before being recognized as a military captain, María Remedios del Valle served as a nurse tending to wounded soldiers on the front lines during the Argentine War of Independence. Her bravery earned her the reverence of Argentines across generations—both Black and white—and the historical title of La Madre de la Patria (Mother of the Nation).

🇦🇷 María Magdalena “Pocha” Lamadrid
Known affectionately as the “grandma to all young people and the entire Afro-Argentine movement,” Pocha dedicated her life to bringing Black identity out of historical invisibility. In the 1990s, she founded África Vive, the groundbreaking NGO that organized grassroots door-to-door censuses in local communities. Her relentless activism was the primary catalyst that forced the Argentine government to officially include the “Afro-descendant” category in the national census, effectively launching the modern Afro-Argentine political movement.

Identity isn’t always reflected on the surface.

Sometimes it’s about reclaiming history. ✊🏽

In Argentina, identifying as Afro-descendant allows white-passing individuals to actively fight historical erasure by honoring their Black lineage. 🇦🇷✨
