Breast cancer cases worldwide are projected to surpass 3.5 million annually by 2050, up from 2.3 million in 2023.

New research reveals a troubling divide: breast cancer deaths rose 99% in the lowest-income countries between 1990 and 2023, while falling 30% in high-income nations. Black women also continue to face disproportionately high mortality rates, highlighting the urgent need for better screening, treatment and access to care.

After years of struggling to get referees’ attention as a youth basketball coach, Maria Carthon decided to create her own solution. Her patented Time Out Synchronized System (T.O.S.S.) lets coaches press a handheld button that sends an instant vibrating alert to an official’s wrist—and the technology has already been piloted in basketball leagues in metro Atlanta. Carthon has invested $100,000 into the invention and says she needs another $200,000 to $250,000 to develop a more robust, league-ready product.⁠

Savannah James is stepping into professional sports ownership.⁠

The entrepreneur and philanthropist has invested in LOVB Los Angeles ahead of the women’s volleyball franchise’s 2026–27 debut. James says watching her daughter Zhuri play volleyball showed her firsthand how the sport can build confidence, discipline and community for young girls.⁠

The ownership group also includes Issa Rae, with the new team set to call Intuit Dome home.⁠

Unrivaled is proving there’s serious money and ownership opportunity in women’s basketball.

The league co-founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart has reached a $650 million valuation after an oversubscribed Series C funding round, nearly doubling its $340 million valuation from 2025. Even more significant: players are the league’s largest shareholder group, with their collective equity pool now approaching $200 million.
