šŸ–ŒļøLook inside BlackFlash 43.2 to learn about this interactive digital project and see three artworks Kahani Ploessl made using the interface!

In direct response to the proliferation of AI, the project presents a form of digital art rooted in transparency. Images are not erased into invisible datasets, but remain intact as textural digital residue. As forms emerge from glitched layers of the source material, the resulting compositions exist in tension between preservation and modification.

Kahani is the 2025 recipient of EQ Bank’s Emerging Digital Artist Award @edaa_eqb . This project is supported by EQ Bank as part of an ongoing partnership that highlights Canadian digital art practices, featuring commissioned works showcased in print and through expanded digital formats. by @blackflashmag

Meganelizabeth Diamond. @meganelizabethdiamond
The Sky as a Performance Site

Sat, Sept 5th, 2026 @ 2pm (SK) / 3pm (MB)
Join us on Zoom this weekend!

—

Presented in conjunction with GLIMPSE, Diamond’s solo exhibition at Godfrey Dean Art Gallery, The Sky as a Performance Site considers clouds, photography, afterimages, and the act of looking upward. Moving between artist talk, visual essay, and participatory performance, Diamond will explore sky burn an ongoing practice of staring into the sky long enough for an image to linger after it has changed and the ways photographs attempt to hold what is already disappearing.

Viewers are encouraged to tune in from an outdoor location, or from somewhere with a view of the sky.

Presented by Godfrey Dean Art Gallery. Co-Hosted by Paved Arts & BlackFlash Magazine.

BlackFlash 43.2 coming September 2026

ā€œThis issue is about homecoming and impermanence; it’s also about the relationship between the part and the whole and, as ever, the centre and the periphery. There is a newfound premium on moving against the logic of optimization. There are mementos and memento mori. There is the vertigo of coming back to a once-familiar place and finding it estranged. There is a folk-art mask that purges wheat. There is cannibalism. There are puppets.ā€ — Madeline Bogoch, Editorial Note: Protean Maxxing

Inside our fall issue, you’ll find writing and artwork from:
Liza Eurich, Joy Walker, Shalaka Jadhav, Hannah Doucet, Katie Lawson, Didier Morelli, Alana Traficante, Simon Fuh, Kahani Ploessl, Maegan Beck, Chantal Khoury, Madeline Bogoch, Althea Thauberger, Eleanor King and Kelly Mark

Purchase your subscription on BlackFlash.ca to make sure you get this issue šŸ“«

Use your phone 🤳 to activate these AR pieces in your magazine!

Through 3D-rendered black and white images, Moni Omubor creates a fictional museum where Yoruba artifacts exist beyond colonial possession. This artist project, titled ā€œThe Backroomā€ employs speculative fiction and Afro-Surrealism to interrogate Western museum practices and imagine new possibilities.

In conversation with Lodoe Laura, artist Annie MacDonell discusses her recent exhibition ā€œThe Beyond Within,ā€ which delves into the history of psychedelic therapy. She explores her collaborative films with Maïder Fortuné and the historical ripples that help us read our fractured moment, sustaining an uncynical belief in art even as its institutions falter.

In ā€œWriting Black Canadian Art,ā€ Yaniya Lee advocates for a critical approach grounded in material practice. Drawing on her recent work with textile artists in Edmonton, Lee makes a case for criticism that attends to how black artists work, focusing on their materials, methods, and processes, while calling for more diverse voices to engage with these practices.
