A celebration of Black people & life north of 96 St in NYC. We're still here, doing it for the culture & our community!⚡️Founder @thehotnessgrrrl
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Have you been to any one of the dozen or so mosques in Harlem? Have you stepped inside a local Bodega, hair salon, barbershop, or urgent care north of 96th St? Do you walk along 1-2-5? Have you sat out in Marcus Garvey or Morningside Parks? Well if you had, you wouldn't think that Black culture in Harlem was dead and that Black people had vanished. In the next few days I'm going to post pics of some of the beautiful Black people that I see whenever I'm chillin in my favorite NYC spot -- the #HarlemMeer. by @blackharlemlives

Thank you for saying this @blackstar.reviews!! People who've never even been to the parade want to change the name.😩😡

This parade goes way back and represents a time when this was the only celebration of Black people in NYC. Lets not lose the plot focusing on the title!

When you're minding your business looking at the West African straw baskets trying to make a quick TJs run, but the band is too good to not stop and then they do Tevin Campbell's Can We Talk and the next thing you know you're singing out loud, off key and dancing with total strangers on the street. Just another Saturday in Harlem in the summer.

Big-up to @jonnoel_musik for keeping 125th and Lenox feeling like a Soul Train Second Line.☀️ 🎶 🥰

Hold up! Maxwell came to Harlem and didn't sing one song. Not even a lil hum of Pretty Wings? Folks were standing out there ...for hours ....in the rain! Maxwell is BAE, but this ain't it. And even after the massive yelled out a request for him to sing he MIMICKED singing. Sorry, there has to be a Do-Over, this is not representative of the culture and of how soul singers interact with Black audiences when they request a song. I've seen Patti LaBelle and Stevie get awards and will break out in a song because they know that's what the culture exemplifies. It's not just a kind gesture, it shows a connection to community and culture on an intimate level. I mean the band was there on stage and they knew all of his songs. This was a no brainer. This is playing in our faces and just 10 blocks from the legendary Apollo where Sandman would've most definitely had to take the stage. We love you Maxwell. Please come back to Harlem and do us right!

Last week I ran into one of my favorite food influencers-- sadeandthecity (yep, she's just as dope in person) and our interaction reminded me that our music, art, style and yes, our fried fish are the cultural receipts that keep us connected. Black Harlem Lives because our community still lives.

Shout out to all the good people who influence by CENTERING Black folk in Harlem esp @tbo.harlem

Tuesday was Bamba Day-- a day honoring the life of Ahmadou Bamba-- one of the greatest spiritual leaders and revolutionaries in Senegalese history. In Harlem, particularly on West 116th, the spirit and style is undeniably vibrant and joyful. Rain or shine, it's always a good day! 📷 by @thehotnessgrrrl
