Astin Couling has earned himself a spot in the Black Magic Hall of Fame with this estimated 30kg kingfish caught off Cape Karikari!

After a slow morning on the water, Astin was flicking a stickbait around a wash rock when it got absolutely smashed off the surface! 💥

After a 10-minute fight, this beast was at the surface and ready for the gaff. What a way to finish the day! 🎣🔥

We were stoked to be involved in the opportunity to partner with Deaf Aotearoa for an informative and engaging seminar evening.

A big thank you to Greg from Auckland Council, Aurion from Surf Life Saving on behalf of Drowning Prevention Auckland, and Jeremy from Black Magic Tackle for sharing their knowledge and expertise.

HOGGY WITH A HOG OF A GUMMY! 🦈🔥

Black Magic Tackle Ambassador Brendon Hogg went out chasing a big red from the yak, but 30 minutes into the fish, this absolute hog of a gummy crashed the party!

Estimated at 15–20kg, this big girl put Hoggy through his paces, dragging him straight off the anchor and putting the gear to the test. What a scrap! 💪🎣

She fell to a half pillie pinned on a DX 5/0 hook, with 60lb Tough Trace and Inferno Braid keeping things locked up.

Too big to safely keep on the yak, Hoggy made the call to send her back — and after one hell of a tussle, she swam away strong.

Now that’s a bloody good yak fish! 🤙🔥

🚨 Red alert on the Capricorn Coast!

Black Magic Tackle ambassador Leigh Holtsbaum made the most of a rare weather window, heading north to 1770 and out to the Bunker Group for an epic weekend chasing Coral Trout and Red Emperor. The mission delivered a massive mixed bag, with plenty of Coral Trout ranging from 50–60cm, Tuskfish, Red Throat Emperor, Husser, and a standout 85cm Red Emperor weighing around 12–13kg.

The reefies fell to a simple bait setup featuring a No. 8 ball sinker, 7/0 C-Point snelled hooks and 60lb Tough Trace, with cut Husser and pilchards doing the damage. Leigh was also running 30lb Hyperglide 13X braid, which had enough grunt to turn the fish before they found the reef.

A few big Chinaman Fish also made an appearance and were safely released, while the sharks managed to claim a couple of the bigger fish along the way.
