Thank you for voting us Best Community Garden of WNC! ☀️🌱🌻

It’s an honor to be recognized by our community in this way, and if you haven’t heard of us, hopefully this gives you some incentive to come check us out!

The Dr. John Wilson Community Garden just celebrated its 22nd year in operation, and over that time we’ve developed and maintained thousands of square feet of growing space organically, a fruit and nut orchard, a native plant trail, a community wide composting system, riverbank restoration projects, taught many workshops (check out our page for 2 coming up this month - Sorghum Fest and Plant Spirit Medicine Workshop) and hosted hundreds of volunteers.

Here’s to years and years of plants, joy, and growing to come!

In case y'all forgot, October is one of the BEST months for hiking in western North Carolina!

We kicked off this month with a great hike in partnership with Henderson County Parks & Rec and the NC Forest Service at Holmes Educational State Forest. Shoutout to Ranger E.J. Dwigans for sharing his wealth of knowledge with us!

This week, we began our search for the best falls colors through our Fall Peaks Hiking Series. In an effort to follow the peak leaf season based on elevation in our region, we began this year's series at Mount Craig (elevation 6,647 ft- the second highest peak east of the Mississippi!) followed by a hike at Craggy Flats (elevation 5,680ft). Although the leaves haven't fully peaked yet, we saw some beautiful pockets on the surrounding mountains.

If you'd like to hit the trail with us, we still have eight hikes left in our Fall Peaks Hiking Series and a few open spots available (sign up at TownofBlackMountain.org)!

Even if you don't join us, we hope that you find some time this month to get outside and enjoy the changing seasons! by @blackmountainrec

Happy Fall Y'all! Thursday, Oct. 22 at 5pm, we are teaming up with Utopian Seed Project again to press juice from the canes we grew with the bicycle press for making molasses! We will also get to taste the molasses from last year's crop. Tiffany Schultz, leader of the Leicester Library Giving Garden and chef will be serving gluten free sorghum snacks, and we will get to learn about cooking with sorghum. TIME CHANGE: Our 2026 Halloween on Town Square event has been pushed back an hour to 5:00-7:00 p.m.!

This time change will better ensure a smoother transition between our event and the annual Howl-O-Ween Pet Parade that will also take place at Town Square on 10/31 from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

We look forward to seeing you there! by @blackmountainrec

Shoutout to all of our amazing volunteers who helped us clean up Lake Tomahawk, Cragmont Park, and Rhododendron Avenue this morning! Thanks to their hard work, our neighborhoods and greenspaces are able to stay healthy and vibrant!

We still have three more cleanups scheduled over the next month with plenty of room for volunteers! Our future cleanups will take place at Veterans Park, downtown Black Mountain, and along the Flat Creek Greenway. Our first hike of the 2026 Arm's Length Adventures Series is in the books! Today, we enjoyed an absolutely stunning hike to the summit(s) of Sam Knob.

Most of our remaining hikes in the series are full, but waitlists are very short! We also have plenty of room on our upcoming litter sweeps throughout town if you'd like to help us keep our green spaces clean! You can learn more and sign up for free today at www.townofblackmountain.org

FLOWERS EVERYWHERE GARDEN FUNDRAISER, 2026

We are gathering for our annual Garden Party Fundraiser “Flowers Everywhere” on Sunday, August 30th from 4:30-7pm to celebrate renewal and flourishing in the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden.

Our Garden Party will be held in our very own Dr. John Wilson Community Garden at 99 White Pine Dr, Black Mountain. The event will feature live music from Becki and the Farm to Jazz, a locally sourced dinner, fresh jam tasting, pick your own flowers and bouquet making with Cindi Quay, medicinal tea tasting, cyanotype sun printing, and tours of the native pollinator garden with Emily Sampson and a tour of our Growing For Donation Vegetable Garden featuring crops from Utopian Seed Project!

Tickets
$40 in advance
$50 at the door
$25 student and needs-based tickets available

Tickets and more information at
https://bmtcommunitygardens.org/flowers-everywhere-2026-garden-party-fundraiser/

Your ticket purchase goes directly to supporting integral garden systems like our internship program, community education programs, tools and supplies, and garden infrastructure needs, so that we can continue to build local food sovereignty by growing food to donate at no cost to those friends and neighbors who need it most, and along the way educating others about gardening and growing community.

Whether you have been a community gardener here since the beginning, or you have never visited us prior and want to learn more, everyone is welcome!

Learn why the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden fills a vital, unique role in the Swannanoa River Valley and how you can help sustain our mission of growing and distributing locally grown, nutritious food to our community through our partnership with Bounty & Soul, while also building community. We are excited to share the bounty of the garden, celebrate successes, and take a look into the future. We look forward to seeing you there rain or shine! by @blackmountainrec

We'd like to extend a huge thank you to local Eagle Scout, Amanda Latta, for choosing River Walk Park for her Eagle Scout Project!

Thanks to Amanda's hard work, River Walk Park now has a new picnic area, dog treat box, and a new bench for park users to enjoy! Amanda also made several environmental improvements by installing new birdhouses and planting over ten native trees throughout the park! It's incredible people like Amanda who ensure our parks and greenspaces are enjoyable for all walks of life for generations to come. If you see Amanda around town, please tell her thank you! by @blackmountainrec
