It’s an honor to be recognized by our community in this way, and if you haven’t heard of us, hopefully this gives you some incentive to come check us out!

The Dr. John Wilson Community Garden just celebrated its 22nd year in operation, and over that time we’ve developed and maintained thousands of square feet of growing space organically, a fruit and nut orchard, a native plant trail, a community wide composting system, riverbank restoration projects, taught many workshops (check out our page for 2 coming up this month - Sorghum Fest and Plant Spirit Medicine Workshop) and hosted hundreds of volunteers.

Here’s to years and years of plants, joy, and growing to come!

Happy Fall Y'all! Thursday, Oct. 22 at 5pm, we are teaming up with Utopian Seed Project again to press juice from the canes we grew with the bicycle press for making molasses! We will also get to taste the molasses from last year's crop. Tiffany Schultz, leader of the Leicester Library Giving Garden and chef will be serving gluten free sorghum snacks, and we will get to learn about cooking with sorghum. Join us!

Thank you to Wellspring Direct Primary Care for supporting the Mount Mitchell Challenge & Black Mountain Marathon! We were thrilled when the founder of Wellspring shared that they’ve run the race several times and are joining us again as a runner in 2027!
Wellspring’s approach is to be a part of the growing movement to restore healthcare at the local level—built on trust, relationships, and real access. Visit them in Black Mountain!

Will we see you at the Flowers Everywhere Garden Party Fundraiser?

Here’s our lineup for the afternoon - only a few days away!

All proceeds go to supporting our mission to Grow, Share, and Educate in the Swannanoa Valley. This means growing local, organic food to share with our community for free, providing access to low barrier education through internships, workshops, and classes, and creating partnerships with other food organizations to increase food sovereignty and access in our area.

This event helps us make all of this work happen and gives us a chance to get together an celebrate all we’ve accomplished! Let’s party!

I had a splendid day marauding around the historic streets of black mountain. Buildings as old as 1840, or so I was told.
I met many who had played the Grand Ole Opry & also once had chicken with Johnny Cash & June Carter.
I had inexpensive beers with priceless human beings.
I even found fantastic live music on a Tuesday night and bribed some passers by to come join the music.
(I bought them some beers & they obliged and tipped the artist on their way out the door)
Black Mountain.
Oh yeah, this guitar was on the way at Old Town District.
