Opera Memphis has a new leader on the podium! 🎶 We congratulate Donald Lee III on his recent appointment and celebrate this exciting new chapter. 👏🏾👏🏿👏🏾👏🏿👏🏾👏🏿👏🏾👏🏿👏🏾👏🏿

Repost from @dailymemphian
•
Donald Lee III comes to @operamemphis as its new music director, after having spent his summer working with the Cincinnati Opera. Originally from Hampton, Virginia, Lee was attracted to the Opera Memphis role because of the organization’s community-oriented nature, he said.

Another thing that drew him to Opera Memphis was the company’s work commissioning new American works, something he is also passionate about.

“In studying music history, we see every country has its repertoire, has its musical tradition,” Lee said. “And we are such a young country. I feel like we’re establishing what that is, and the only way to establish that is to continue to invest in that work.”

Finally, Lee was attracted to Opera Memphis because of the organization’s artist hires.

“There are stars — like (mezzo-soprano) Jamie Barton was just here,” Lee said. “But also some of my peers in the industry who are still in the earlier stages of their career, but have immense talents, have worked here.

“A company like this that shares so many values that I share, it just seemed like a great fit and I’m very glad that it worked out,” Lee said.
