POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Meet @hu.sda president Amiya Conwell! After seeing the reactions of children during an active shooter incident at her job, she decided to charter @studentsdemand on her campus to become the change she wanted to see in the world. “It’s nonsensical that a country that claims to be so great still allows our students to go to school with the full knowledge that coming home is not guaranteed.”

As a new school year starts at Hampton, Amiya is excited to continue advocating and uplifting the Black voices on campus and in her community that have been impacted by gun violence.

“It is very jarring to me that gun violence is a common occurrence in many of our neighborhoods to the point where people do not feel emboldened to speak out about it. This leaves my community voiceless in the conversation to change laws. Violence affects everyone, so everyone deserves to be heard.”

I am so grateful for student leaders like Amiya who fight every day to make our campuses and communities safer. I often say that, as a mother, I don’t have the luxury of sitting on the sidelines in this fight. As many of our young people know, neither do they.

"A lot of the times, our intellectuals and our creatives, their lives are cut short...we always think, 'what could they have done?' This shouldn't have been left to us as a what-if." - @ivanxgeez

@morehousesda leader @nehemiahmauriceee has a message for Georgia lawmakers: Your constituents demand action on gun violence. Listen to them, or lose your jobs.

Right now, Georgia students, survivors, and @MomsDemand volunteers are calling on their representatives to pass HB 1127. This critical bill would ban small, Lego-sized devices called “switches” that can convert a regular pistol into a machine gun.

Twenty-nine states and DC have already banned switches. Now, it’s time for Georgia to do the same. If you live in Georgia, text GA to 644-33 to send your lawmaker a message in support of HB 1127! by @blackstudentssda

The Orangeburg Massacre was the first instance of police shooting and killing students on an American campus, and the victims and survivors never got justice. The only person convicted and jailed was Cleveland Sellers, a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee who was wounded in the shooting.

“We were young African-Americans trying to get an education. We were trying to do the right thing.” - Marie Artis, former SCSU student

Black students have been at the forefront of social movements for decades, paving the way for our generation to organize and achieve our goals today. In their honor, we continue their legacies, keeping up the fight for safety and equality for all. #BlackHistoryMonth by @blackstudentssda

HBCU students should be celebrating Homecoming, not running from bullets. Our campuses are places for learning, not for experiencing the pain and trauma of a school shooting. We demand that our lawmakers stop putting gun industry profits ahead of our lives and take action on gun violence. by @blackstudentssda
