Your life shapes what we do. 🖤🏳️‍⚧️

Introducing the Black Trans Alliance Community Survey 2026 — open to Black trans people right across the UK.

This is about our real, everyday lives, because your experiences are what should shape the services we build, not guesswork. It takes about 15 minutes and it’s completely anonymous.

Wherever you are in the UK — your voice belongs in this. Support, safety, spaces, or something we haven’t thought of yet: tell us, so we build it with you, not for you.

👉🏾 Tap the link in our bio to take the survey, and share it with someone whose voice should be counted too.

Trans women are women. And they’ve always been here. 🏳️‍⚧️🖤

On 1 October 1977, The Jeffersons aired “Once a Friend” — George reunites with an old Navy buddy, Edie Stokes, who is now living as her true self. It’s widely remembered as one of US television’s first sympathetic portrayals of a trans woman.

Was it perfect? No — Edie was played by Veronica Redd, a cis actress, and some of George’s language is off-key by today’s standards. But the heart of it still lands: she is who she says she is, and she deserves respect. Nearly 50 years ago, primetime TV 🇺🇸was already telling that truth — long before trans women could tell their own stories on screen, the way POSE did.

So when anyone says being trans is “new” — it isn’t. Black trans women have always existed, on screen and off, living, loving, and demanding to be seen. Understanding starts with remembering that.

🎬 The Jeffersons (1977), “Once a Friend.”

Save this, share it, and tell us in the comments: when did you first see yourself reflected on screen?

Before there was Black British dance, there was Berto. 🤎

Born Wilbert Passerley in Jamaica in 1911, Berto Pasuka came to Britain in 1939.

In 1946, he and fellow queer Jamaican dancer Richie Riley founded Les Ballets Nègres, Britain’s first Black dance company.

They toured Britain and Europe to sell-out houses, and they did it as two queer Black men, decades before the law or the dance world made room for either.

Most dance histories still skip them.

This Black History Month, we’re honouring our communities, and that means writing our own back in. 🖤🤎🏳️‍🌈

This Black History Month 🇬🇧, we’re honouring our communities. ✊🏾🤎

The theme this year asks us to recognise the people whose everyday contributions shape, support and sustain Black life across the UK. For us, that means the people who rarely get the headline but always hold the line.
The elder who opened her door when we had nowhere to go.

The organiser who kept the group chat alive through every hard week.

The carer, the hairdresser, the DJ, the auntie, the friend who checks in.

The chosen family who made sure none of us had to do this alone.

Black trans people have always been part of Black British history. We’ve been in the movements, the clubs, the churches, the kitchens and the front lines, even when we were written out of the story.

This month we’re writing ourselves back in, and we’re saying thank you.

We’re supporting Black Trans Alliance with our fundraiser calendar because Black trans people deserve to see themselves represented, celebrated, and supported within our communities. We believe trans liberation must be inclusive and intersectional and that challenging racism within our own communities is part of that work. This fundraiser is a small but meaningful way for us to show solidarity and support the vital work of Black Trans Alliance.
