“There is not a night dark enough to deter me from my freedom and future that centers Black trans joy. It is my already claimed birthright.”

In a beautiful letter by our Director Bré Rivera (@amirah_bre), we outline our highlights of 2023, which included awarding more than $2 million to the field to cultivate and sustain Black trans joy, growing our team, launching our Arts and Culture program and expanding our advisor committee to guide our guiding our Arts and Culture and Disability Justice funding. 2023 was also a year of rough transitions, including challenges with our community care grants process and limited capacity.

As we enter the fifth year of our five-year plan, BTF continues to undergo transitions with a commitment to live into our values of being a political home for Black trans joy in 2024. In light of this, we will be pausing new applications for funding this year. Please click the link in our bio to read the full letter.

Sharing this on behalf of our partners @tko_alabama! 💜🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

In celebration of their 12th birthday, TKO is launching their “Take Care With TKO” campaign, aimed at raising $50,000. This initiative focuses on expanding their essential services for Black TLGBQ+ communities in Alabama, including healthcare access, housing, healthy food, mental health support, and educational programs.

By supporting this campaign, donors can directly contribute to their mission of fostering love, liberation, and a future where all TLGBQ+ individuals live full and healthy lives.

Is “Philanthropy High” all it’s cracked up to be? Our Program Associate Rainier Miles (@lovesparxx) tackles dismantling clique culture in philanthropy and actionable ways funders can show up for their grantees:

“Grantees that have spoken to [Black Trans Fund] about their experiences with other funders often state that they leave those conversations feeling defeated, or unheard. The processes are impersonal, robotic, and lacking in connection ... If you are reading this and you feel uncomfortable or that this could be referencing you/your org, maybe it’s time to rethink grantee interactions.”

🚨 REMINDER: Complete the Black Trans Reproductive Justice Survey — it’s open until the end of this month!

The Black Trans Reproductive Justice Survey seeks the insight and experiences of Black Trans-identified folks within the frame of reproductive justice. This survey is an opportunity for Black trans-identified folks (within and outside of the binary) to inform and assess the politics of an intersectional Reproductive Justice movement that also centers on Black trans communities.

We are looking for participants with varied experiences nationally so that we can map out what access, understanding, and needs look like for Black trans communities across the country. Follow this link (also in our bio), submit a survey, and pass the survey along.

If you have any further questions or would like to connect to expand outreach, please email: BTRJSurvey@gmail.com. by @blacktransfund

This month we shine our spotlight on our reproductive justice organizers and partners Ash Williams (@ashwilliamsclt, he/him) and Cazembe Jackson (@unclecaz, he/him) and the Black Trans RJ Survey (see second slide).

🚨 Body autonomy has been under attack and the fall of Roe v. Wade alerted reproductive health advocates to organize in ways that often only managed to address abortion access. But what does reproductive justice look like for Black trans people? Principled in Black liberation, our partnership with these folks seeks to expand the discourse and focus on the voices of Black trans people who have long been a part of this movement. Their Black Trans RJ Survey picks up at the intersections of racial justice, trans justice, housing justice, prison abolition, and abortion access to scope out what Black trans and gender-expansive folks identify as protection and care for their right to thrive.

🙏🏿 Honoring their long work and commitment to the intersections of Black Liberation, trans and gender-expansive liberation, abolition and reproductive justice, we’re extending loads of gratitude for the work Ash, Cazembe and others have and still do in training our communities, organizing nationally, and locally in the south. They’ve also gifted us with their intimate stories and testified on behalf of many Black, trans, and queer folks emboldening the intersections of our movements.

✊🏿🏳️‍⚧️ Black trans folks are starting and rearing families, are doulas, midwives, and patient navigators supporting gender journeys. Black trans men can be Dads and need perinatal care and postpartum support. Black trans kids deserve to grow up. Black trans women can be Moms and also need protection and community to take care of their kids. Black trans folks are incarcerated and deserve to be released and supported with access to safe and sustainable communities. Black trans politics in reproductive justice is beyond a “birthing person” and we all need to know and show up better for Black trans communities within and outside of the binary.
