Nearly seven years after he was shot in the back and neck and left paralyzed, 25-year-old Khalil Watson experienced a rite of passage for the first time, when he received his associate’s degree from Reynolds Community College. He walked across the stage to get his degree with the help of a robotic exoskeleton loaned out by Sheltering Arms Physical Therapy.

Watson, who lives in Eastern Henrico with his family, relied on public transportation to get to class, which on occasion showed the lengths he would take to accomplish his goals.

“There would be times when I would miss the GRTC bus, and I’d ride my chair all the way downtown,” Waston said. The journey from Eastern Henrico to Reynold’s downtown location is many miles on roads that do not always have sidewalks.

“Nobody would know how I got there but myself and a couple of people I told. I don’t have a sensible vehicle, so I had to do the best thing I could to get to school,” he said. “I was left with two options: either miss or figure out how to get to school. So, I did just that.”

Soon, Watson will enroll at VCU, where after he achieves his bachelor’s degree, he plans to pursue a master’s in social work. Follow @blackxgrad for more ✨🎓 by @blackxgrad

“There was a campus shooting, I was the victim. The shooting left me toeless, worthless and confused. If it was up to the enemy I would have not returned to Albany State University. If it was up to the enemy I would be walking with a limp.

If I had the opportunity to go back in time and do something different on that very day to avoid that tragedy I wouldn’t. That experience made me who I am today. Most people would’ve folded but I BODIED it 💪🏾 & that’s that on that ‼️

I’m excited to finally share that my man and I are officially done with nursing school! 👩🏾‍🎓

Nursing school was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but having my best friend by my side made it all worth it. We’ve conquered the 14-hour study nights, the testing anxiety, and both the major and minor setbacks when the odds were stacked against us, and we made it out TOGETHER!

Going back to school was a decision we made in 2021, a choice that felt almost unattainable at the time. After high school, I swore I’d never return to school because of past experiences. I doubted my ability to succeed, especially after so many years away. But Tyrik and I were determined to better our lives TOGETHER and serve not only the Lord but the people. So, we enrolled—and never looked back!

To my study partner, my best friend, my other half, and soulmate all in one—WE DID IT! I couldn’t have done this without you. I’m thankful everyday for God bringing you into my life. We sacrificed and dedicated so much time into studying, now It’s time to live life baby! @telltyrik ❤️

A huge thank you to my family and friends for their unwavering encouragement over the past few years; it never went unnoticed. And to anyone out there wondering if they should go back to school—trust me, if I could overcome my fears and doubts, so can you. It’s never too late to chase your dreams.

Without further ado—FINALLY, I PRESENT TO YOU THE MOVIE, LOVE & NURSING. 👩🏾‍🎓

Family legacy (noun) - A powerful and meaningful concept that goes beyond wealth, and encompasses generational values, individual and collective identities, traditions, lore and family history.⁣
⁣
Our first-generation mother always joked that all of her kids were going to graduate from UCLA. We grew up with countless UCLA shirts, an overflow of memorabilia, and talked about how it would be cool, but very difficult to do. ⁣
⁣
On June 14th, our mother’s dream will essentially come true with her youngest daughter officially graduating from UCLA, making all three of her daughters UCLA Alumni (our brother is currently a sophomore at Morehouse College).⁣
⁣
Four Black women college graduates, from the #1 public university in the world. ⁣#classof1987 #classof2015 #classof2022 #classof2024
⁣
As our current chapter at UCLA comes to a close, not many words can describe what our mother means to us, and our family as a whole. But, this accomplishment illustrates the power of guidance, encouragement, expectation, and most importantly love within a family.⁣
⁣
We love you mama, and are honored to have carried on your Bruin legacy.⁣ Thank you @dailybruin for the feature! ~ @besavageee
