✰✰✰✰.5 (4.5/5) : “One of Those Amnesia Stories” by Neva Rain

this was truly a doozy of a novel. i’ve neva read anything from the author or the amnesia book trope collection before this, and it certainly exceeded my expectations!

because of its emotional intensity, it took me quite a while to finish. but i’m not upset by it— i enjoyed diving into the two main characters and understanding just how deep a person’s love for someone can be, despite what is seen from the outside. this book has shown to me that there really are two sides of the same coin sometimes; time just needs to pass and fate just needs to unravel.

i give 4.5 starz out of 5 simply for how well-crafted the story and its characters are. would i read it again? maybe not for a while. but would i read another neva rain work? heck yeah!

✰✰✰✰✰ (5/5) : “The Bone Mask” by @writingles

i haven’t read an ARC (advanced reader’s copy) in 3 years. and i am so glad that this was my first since then! real ppls know i’ve been raving about this book for weeks and weeks 😁

i first found out about TBM through threads, where the author was on the hunt for legit ARC readers. all it took was seeing that a cat and a horse would be involved for me to send her a DM straight away hehe

when i first read the synopsis, i honestly pictured a “beauty and the beast”-inspired story, with the FMC being perceived as “odd” by the townspeople and the MMC being some sort of a beast… and them being snowed in together... but it most certainly wasn’t what i expected at all!

it’s beautiful, thrilling, and the polar opposite of ice cold 😏. every character, the world-building, and the dialogues are very well-written and kept me drawn in at all times. the aesthetic and colors of the book itself are gorgeous. i was truly struggling to put it down. and it truly is THE most outstanding new work of literature i have connected with and been surprised by in a long time.

i am so privileged to have been picked as one of its first readers, and i really do hope The Bone Mask and L.A. Hughes skyrocket in popularity. they are so deserving of it!

thank you so much to the author, Ms. Hughes, for making my year with this read. the fact that this is only your debut novel is shocking to me. i am so eager to see what’s next up your sleeve! 💝🌟

RANDOM READZ ✰ Booksale is a secondhand bookstore chain in the Philippines that offers all types and genres of books for as low as ₱5-30 PHP. and i mean ALL types and genres. it’s actually a dangerous place for me because i always end up buying something when i tell myself i won’t lol

i’d argue that it’s the ultimate bookstore chain over the popular Fully Booked and National Bookstore. the books, while used, are usually in good condition and the prices are soooo worth it, esp if u find rare or popular titles 🤩 like, one paperback at fully booked = 3-5+ paperbacks at Booksale

why 7? … why not?

7 is actually my favorite number, so in doing my own version of the “My Personality in Books” trend, i decided to pick out 7 books that i think represent my personality well!

yes, “The Bone Mask” by @writingles is here again lolz 🤩 i really do love this novel y’all, and it’s not even out to the public yet haha (📣 SEPT. 28, 2026 on paperback, digital & Kindle Unlimited!)

here r sum brief explanacíons for each book:

i know a lot of ppl shizzle on this book, but i personally really needed something like this to move forward after a year’s+ worth of putting other people’s time and value over my own.

2025, in particular, was a really stressful year for me. i wasn’t being kind to myself in many ways, and it didn’t help to find out that ppl i once considered to be close with turned out to be untrustworthy. and even then i was still giving them what they didn’t deserve from me. but this book helped me affirm that i should no longer be giving a shizzle about them, as their shenanigans don’t actually have any value in my life. more importantly, i finally started prioritizing myself, instead of prioritizing others.

in reading this book, i realized that one must also be conscious of and actively developing their emotional intelligence in order to apply thy concepts of “let them” and “let me”. the lack of such makes the hate for the book understandable, as many ppl will, unfortunately, take the words of the author in the wrong way. and while the book’s length is quite much, i did find it necessary to understand how to use the concepts in different situations. i do have to say, though, that the whole trademarking of “let them” by Mel is disappointing, especially since the concept has been around for centuries + she was allegedly inspired by author Cassie Phillips’ 2019 poem “Just Let Them”. but you know what? just let her do her thing, and i will let me use my energy on more important stuffs. 🙂

also the price of this book holy goodness

i’ve been seeing the trend here + on threads where book ppls are sharing one book from each year they’ve been alive 📚 and i decided to twist it by diving deep into the literature archives (via googlé) and picking out unpopular books that i’ve generally never heard of… until now!

ofc, i HAD to include my #1 favorite read of 2026… a soon-to-be-released debut novel by an up-and-coming indie author that i had the privilege of being an ARC reader for. i promise this isn’t a paid ad or sumn BUT “The Bone Mask” by @writingles is perfect for fans of genuine romance, fantasy, animals, cozy snowed-in stories, and spicy 🔞. more about it in my soon-to-be-posted arc review! 😋🫶

better late than never 😋 i decided to condense my monthly recaps into one post from now on since it’s easier to put together. my august wasn't quite eventful reading-wise, but my book-buying surely was! lol

ngl, How to Solve Your Own Murder was a pretty tough read to get through because of its word flow, but more on that in my rating + review post of it 💉 but getting to read a physical Babymouse book after like 15 years was DA BEST possible ending to the month. i loved her as a kid and she’s still just as lovable now! i’m treating The Artist’s Way as a course, so i’m gradually getting through it. The Singing Athlete is just reading-on-the-side for now. and The Bone Mask? we shall see in my September recap! 😁

COZY + ENGAGING READZ ✰ Fully Booked is a bookstore chain in the Philippines that offers modern and premium titles… at very modern and premium prices 😭🤩 but thankfully, i’ve gotten my money’s worth every time.

i didn’t have any spending moneyz when i went to my local branch, but i couldn’t resist checking out their selection (for the 10000000th time lolz). i love me some nice-looking book covers, so i took pix of the most intriguing to mi:

- The Knife of Never Letting Go ✰ been eyeing this for the whole year… rlly want my own copy hehe
- The Visions ✰ i own this one! still haven’t read it tho lol

better late than never! as one always does, i splurged on an abundance of bewks during my month of birth 😋

very surprisingly, most of them were from online and local secondhand bookshops. and in pretty great condition! they are my favorite places in the world, and when i do travel around the world someday, i know i MUST make it a habit to visit at least one local bookshop in every town and country i visit. each have so many stories to offer; not just in the books they sell, but the buildings they reside in.
