When water is healthy, we are healthy. But, invasive plants can harm the hydrology of streams. Phd student Blair Galvin (Lincoln University) is investigating how invasive plants use waterways to travel and spread at Horomaka Banks Peninsula.

Blair's research has three steps. First, mapping where alien plant species occur across the peninsula. Second, undertaking vegetation and seed deposition surveys to see how hydrology, human population density and land use influence native and alien plant communities. Lastly, comparing these results with environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys to see if eDNA is an effective tool for detecting alien plant species across waterways.

Supervised by Dist Prof Philip Hulme (Lincoln University), Blair’s mahi supports riparian restoration and weed management efforts to maintain healthy waterways.

Thank you to everyone that ever helped us in someway, I wish I could name everyone but there are too many people. Thank you the bros @mitchbarnard_ and @el.bee7 for riding it out all those years. Couldn’t have done it without y’all.
