When water is healthy, we are healthy. But, invasive plants can harm the hydrology of streams. Phd student Blair Galvin (Lincoln University) is investigating how invasive plants use waterways to travel and spread at Horomaka Banks Peninsula.

Blair's research has three steps. First, mapping where alien plant species occur across the peninsula. Second, undertaking vegetation and seed deposition surveys to see how hydrology, human population density and land use influence native and alien plant communities. Lastly, comparing these results with environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys to see if eDNA is an effective tool for detecting alien plant species across waterways.

Supervised by Dist Prof Philip Hulme (Lincoln University), Blair’s mahi supports riparian restoration and weed management efforts to maintain healthy waterways.

The 2026 Australasian Weeds Conference was a rewarding experience for the weeds lab. 📸 Niyi Bamgboye, Aleks Deloverov, Dist Prof Phil Hulme, Viktor Josefsson, Friederike Espinoza, Blair Galvin, and Jan Dudenhoeffer.

"A major highlight for me was presenting some of the early findings from my PhD research on bird dispersed invasive woody plants in New Zealand. It was particularly useful to share the work with an audience spanning weed science, biosecurity, research and on the ground management, and to receive questions and perspectives that helped me think further about the applied relevance of the research." -Niyi

For Viktor, "the best part was to be able to present my research at a conference for the first time". Viktor went on to win the award for Best Student Presentation.🎉

All in all, AWC was a great opportunity to present and refine research and make connections with others in weed management to support solutions in Aotearoa. Everyone's research presentation was well received.
