It was a pleasure to sit down with Harry Connick Jr. last night to discuss his book, Babe: Elaboratio. Thank you to Parnassus Books, Vanderbilt Libraries, and everyone who attended this special event.

A special thanks to Harry for joining our big band rehearsal earlier in the day and sharing inspiring words of wisdom with our students. It was an experience they won’t soon forget.

A great city has a great symphony.

The Nashville Symphony’s impact reaches far beyond the concert hall. At Blair, it lives in the connections between professional musicians and students, in young singers’ first orchestral performances, and in the joy of creating music together.

To the Symphony’s musicians, staff and chorus members: thank you for your artistry, mentorship and dedication. Our support is with you and everyone affected by this suspension, with hope for music to fill your stage again.

The Symphony's artistry enriches our city and its future matters to us all. by @blairschoolvu

A life in jazz is preserved in the archive and returning to the stage.

Pianist, composer and arranger Mike Longo was best known for his enduring musical partnership with Dizzy Gillespie. Now, Vanderbilt’s collection of Longo’s handwritten scores, recordings, photographs and other materials is inspiring both a new exhibition and a special Blair Big Band performance.

The Blair Big Band presents Archive Grooves: The Music of Mike Longo Sept. 28 in Ingram Hall, bringing selections preserved in the Longo archive from manuscript to stage.

The exhibition Mike Longo and a Legacy in Jazz is on display through Nov. 30 at Ingram Hall and Vanderbilt’s Central Library.

🎹 Four hands. 88 keys. And a little choreography.

What happens when two solo pianists (who also happen to be married) have to share the same keyboard?

Blair piano professor Sun-A Park and pianist Ammon Perry Bratt open Blair’s fall season Sept. 1 with a piano four-hands recital featuring an all-American program of Zaimont, Beach, Barber and Gershwin. 🇺🇸🎶

“There is now a spoken discussion in rehearsals, a bit of choreographing done to adjust to each other’s physicality,” Park says. “At the same time, it’s very fun and comforting to be together on stage.”

Come see how four hands navigate 88 keys.

📅 Sept. 1 | 7:30 p.m.

Vanderbilt mourns the loss of leader, benefactor and friend Martha Rivers Ingram.

Click the link in @vanderbiltalumni’s bio to learn more about her life and legacy.

In 1998, honoring the wishes of her late husband, E. Bronson Ingram II, Martha Rivers Ingram made what was believed at the time to be the largest private gift ever to an American college or university.

She gave 20 million shares of Ingram Micro Inc., a computer distribution company spun off from Ingram Industries in 1996, to the Ingram Charitable Fund, a family charity established in 1990.

The fund’s charter specified that 40 percent of its income and assets would go to Vanderbilt, and the stock gift was valued at more than $300 million.

The gift was possible because of E. Bronson Ingram’s vision and leadership in building Ingram Industries, and it reflected both his and Martha’s deep commitment to the university.

Ingram led the Vanderbilt Board of Trust from 1999 until 2011. The call to be chair of the Board of Trust surprised her when it came in 1999. Her husband had been a longtime member of the Board of Trust and chairman from 1991 until 1995. Some of her children were graduates, but Ingram considered herself “on the periphery” of the university.

“I was not a Vanderbilt graduate,” said Ingram, an alumna of Vassar, in 2011. “But I feel as if I am one now in many ways.”

The idea of the residential colleges initiative initially came from Ingram, who remembered how she felt as a nervous freshman at Vassar in the 1950s.

Ingram wondered how she might feel if she arrived on Vanderbilt’s doorstep as an 18-year-old first-year student. She decided that something had to be done to put that anxious teenager at ease.

“It seemed to me that we were reaching out and pulling in more and more students from more and more places—Nebraska, New Mexico, California, everywhere—and less and less of them were coming with a crowd,” she said. “They were all alone, some away from home for the very first time.”

Thus was born the first @rescolleges concept at Vanderbilt, The Commons, which opened in 2008 and brings together all first-year students who live in 10 houses on the Peabody campus, each guided by a head o by @blairschoolvu
