155 years ago tonight, at least 18 Chinese residents of Los Angeles were killed by a mob on Calle de los Negros. No one was ever held accountable.

The city is now building a memorial, due to open before the 2028 Olympics.

The Ghosts of Chinatown is my way of making sure their story is heard. Tonight, I’m just remembering them. 🕯️

Los Angeles, October 24, 1871. In one night, a mob killed at least 18 Chinese residents, about a tenth of the city’s Chinese community. Almost nobody remembers it.

The Ghosts of Chinatown is my song cycle for bass-baritone, viola & piano that tells this story. It premiered this September at Vanderbilt, and for the next month I’m sharing everything behind it: the history, the score, and the night it was finally heard.

I had such a wonderful time at Vanderbilt University! Taught lessons, played a mini recital, and gave a masterclass. The students were fantastic and so fun to work with. ❤️

A profound thanks to Prof. Molly Barth for having me and to Burkart Flutes for making it happen.

Next stops: Austin Peay, Tennessee Tech, and MTSU. See you soon! 🎶

Today, we celebrate the single release of composer, bandleader, and saxophonist Ryan Middagh’s “(If I Were Giant) Jingle Bells”! 🎅🏽🎄🎷

Rather than offering a conventional holiday record, Middagh’s upcoming album—releasing on October 30th—reworks familiar songs with fresh arrangements that highlight his skill as a writer, giving well-known material new character while still honoring its roots. The result is a collection that Middagh hopes captures the warmth and joy of the season for listeners.

Enjoy this new Ear Up Records featured single, and be on the lookout for Middagh’s full album release! 👂⬆️
