VOR Reflex

Your eyes and balance system working together

What is the VOR?

VOR stands for Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex.

It is an automatic reflex that helps keep your vision clear when your head is moving.

For example, when you turn your head to the right, your eyes automatically move slightly to the left. This allows you to keep looking at the same object even though your head is moving.

A simple example

Try this:

1. Hold your thumb out in front of you.
2. Focus your eyes on your thumbnail.
3. Slowly turn your head from side to side while keeping your eyes on your thumb.

Your eyes should automatically move in the opposite direction to your head.

That's your VOR working.

Why is it important?

Your balance system in your inner ear detects head movement and sends information to your brain.

Your brain then uses this information to control your eye movements.

This helps you:

- Keep your vision clear while moving
- Maintain your balance
- Know where your head is in space
- Move your head and body confidently

What happens if the system isn't working well?

After conditions such as concussion, vestibular disorders or other injuries, the VOR can sometimes become less efficient.

You may notice:

- Blurred or "bouncy" vision when moving your head
- Dizziness or nausea
- Feeling off-balance
- Difficulty reading or looking at screens
- Symptoms when walking or turning your head
- Feeling uncomfortable in busy environments

Can you train it?

Yes.

Specific exercises can gradually challenge the connection between your eyes, inner ear and brain.

These exercises are often called VOR or gaze-stabilisation exercises.

The aim is to gradually improve your ability to move your head while keeping your vision stable and controlling your symptoms.

Important: These exercises should be progressed based on your symptoms and your assessment. More dizziness is not necessarily better.

The simple takeaway

Your inner ear tells your brain that your head is moving.
Your brain tells your eyes how to move.
Together, they help keep your vision stable.

Head moves → inner ear detects movement → brain processes it → eyes move → vision stays stable. by @blake_physio

Jemar is the physio I see when I need some work done!

We are former colleagues and he has done some training with me so he treats like me 🤗

General Range of motion through the lumbar spine doesn't normally pick up that there's an issue going on. Most people even say their back has no issues, no pain (which is awesome).

Direct palpation through the lumbar spine/ sacral region is usually provocative!! taken in New Wave Health Co by @blake_physio

I prescribe "core" exercises 🫪

If I assess any body part/ joint I'm testing for movement, strength and endurance.

As a physio I can help make a difference to pain, range of motion, strength and endurance.

So I'm going to assess and treat/prescribe accordingly.

Inb4 back pain is complex and biopsychosocial model of treatment. Yes I know! I'm addressing all aspects. Some of y'all forgot the "bio" part.

Inb4 banded shoulder rotation exercise sucks.

According to the research - walking is effective for back pain. According to the research, nothing works. According to the research, everything works.

Treat the person in front of you.

My way of treating is to isolate, then integrate. But only when clinically indicated. taken in New Wave Health Co by @blake_physio

A little work perk 🤝🏋️‍♀️

I’ve been dealing with some back pain lately and it’s been affecting my workouts, but I loveee my training so I headed in to see @blake_physio from @newwavehealthco for a consult, some manual therapy and a form + technique assessment. We went through some of the exercises I regularly do at the gym, made a few adjustments and looked at ways I can keep progressing without aggravating my back.

Blake also happens to be one of my clients, so we did a little service swap, VA support in exchange for physio.

One of the coolest parts of working with other local businesses. 🙌

Dealing with FAl/labral tear can be difficult ! Pain and clicking deep into the hip/groin + reduced hip bending and internal rotation sucks.

I have this condition. Myself and even other physios I know have made the mistake of trying to jam the hip into getting more mobility but it only makes things worse.

Hip mobilisations and proper hip strengthening and building control through the hip is needed.

I've helped athletes go from zero running and squatting return to long runs, playing football, and snatching again
