One year ago today, I experienced one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through, losing my dad. Addiction may have taken over the last few years of his life, but I will always remember him as the caring, supportive dad who coached my hockey team and never failed to show up for me. Watching him slowly lose himself to addiction during the last few years of his life left permanent scars on me that I’m still recovering from to this day, but another thing it did was make me realize how short and precious life really is. I encourage everyone to spend as much time as possible with their loved ones, and for anyone out there struggling with addiction or mental health issues, please reach out and know that you’re not alone.
