Still at a loss for words. Every once in a while all the variables line up and we can ski steep, stable, bottomless powder in Tuckerman Ravine. The last time we saw this perfect alignment with a big storm was around 2016 (@blswartz and @squawkandident 👊🏼🤘🏼) Patience is key I guess. Can’t thank @gbfitnessandadventure enough for hauling all the camera gear up and down the mountain and shooting photos in the cold and snow all day!! Huge shoutout to @eatonboulders for all the great conversations, laughter, and thoughtful discussions about risk management. Huge congrats to @russelln2009 for the 100% commitment to a full on day in the ravine! We should do this again. The in-between time: riding to and from the office, raccoons, we had waves once, blueberries, Saturday long rides, quickest of trips to North Conway, and bug boats. The vast majority of the last three months was spent learning from, and working with, the UNE counseling team. All the gratitude for those incredible humans. Therapy is a bidirectional process revealing parts of the self and our relationships with others in a shared process of growth. To that end, this journey wouldn’t have been impossible without the unconditional support and love from @k_saw. Tired. Proud. All the things. Grad school ✅. Navigating the last hanging panel of snow before all the pieces of the puzzle snapped together. I’ve been thinking about this day as I make anxiety driven edits on a final portfolio presentation. It took way longer to ski the line than I imagined it would. Similarly, it’s taken much longer to finish this degree than I thought it would. Now, all of a sudden, here we are arching the final turns before looking back to start making sense of it all. It’s funny how things seem impossible in the moment and then inevitable when we’re on the other side. There’s always a way through. This is where you belong. Those have been the daily reminders throughout this process. Four more weeks at UNE after tonight and then maybe spend some time with @phucskywalker for a proper graduation 🤘🏼!! Thanks again for documenting @nevinsphoto. I don’t think tonight’s talk will be as rad as the day in the first photo… but I’ll try. Note: the song is on repeat on the way to work. Skiing remains fun. Couple snowfield laps, plus a diagonal and sluice to cap off the day with @thatskiinglawyerguy… which was immediately followed by two days of proper ski wandering and ice coast conditions with Toby,
TC, and Thibault. Legends. This is Dean. December 28th, 7:15 am, I waited for coffee to work its caffeinated magic while I watched the energy in the pack room escalate. Leaning against the wall at the bottom of the stairs, I noticed someone sitting on the bench opposite the recycling bins and trash cans. They had a similar thousand yard stare and sense of disbelief with how busy the space had become. As I walked past, I looked at this person, said “good luck buddy,” and gave them a quick fist bump. That was the entirety of my first conversation with Dean. A few days later I was in the same spot and Dean was in his, both of us with the same puzzled look on our faces. I walked over and introduced myself. Dean responded with a quick memory hook: “Dean, like Dean Martin.” Every day this season I’ve watched Dean slip between crowds of skiers, climbers, and hikers, quietly doing his job. Before walking out the door to join students and guests, the last thing I would do is give Dean a fist bump and say “good luck buddy, have a great day” and he would simply reply, “you too.” Checking in with Dean quickly became an integral part of the daily routine. A nonnegotiable like radio checks and warm layers. This past Sunday I told Dean it was the last course of the season and asked if we could take a photo together. He quickly agreed, gave me a fist bump, and said “good luck.” That was it. A perfect summary of the last four months of work. Many thanks for an incredible winter Dean and thank you for taking care of the space we teach in, often seek refuge in, and for many of us, find connection and community in. See ya next winter buddy!
