“Apathy has no place here.” That was my main takeaway from this weeks @protectourwinters Leadership Summit up in West Glacier Montana. The summit brings together scientists on the cutting edge of climate research and solutions with creatives and athletes to help communicate the need for continued progress! In the United States emissions are trending DOWN. Real change can happen.

Feeling really energized and excited as always to be a part of this group. Every chance I get to meet my hero’s in the outdoor world I take it!

I didn’t grow up skiing or spending much time in the mountains. Being awarded the John Donnellan Education Scholarship through the Mount Washington Avalanche Center has been a game changer for my confidence in the backcountry. As an adult learner from a community often underrepresented in winter sports, my journey into ski touring, mountaineering, and ice climbing has been just as much about access to safe learning spaces as it has been about skills and gear.

This scholarship removed the biggest barrier many folks face: the cost of avalanche education. Through the Donnellan family’s generosity, @mwacenter made it possible for me to take a 3-day AIARE 1 course with @smguides combining classroom learning with field experience. Beyond terrain, rescue, and snow science, my biggest takeaway was learning how strong planning and shared decision-making keep teams safe (see previous self-arrest post).

I’m deeply grateful for John’s friendship and his commitment to the Greater New England outdoors community. I’m excited to pay it forward by inspiring others to build skills, gain confidence, and help grow a more inclusive backcountry community.

Shout out to @blakekeogh for being an awesome teacher!

Maybe the best one yet. What a season. A lot of teaching, a whole lot of learning, and skiing through it all. Thankful for all of the opportunities to gain and share knowledge over the course of the season, and all of the support along the way. I couldn’t do any of it without the people around me. Thanks for having me along.

Shoutout @freeheelinghickey and @tromzsam for the best basement bedroom north of the notch

So much to reflect on and we’re only halfway through

Despite my best efforts, skiing remains fun

Undoubtedly the lightest snow I’ve ever skied on the East Coast. Somehow under 5%. Five hours in the car, a lot of boondoggling for 10 seconds of peak experience that’ll stay with me for a long long time. We’ve been waiting years for a generous winter back East and we’re damn lucky to have it at our feet. And lucky to have the time, flexibility, and freedom to take advantage. If you played hooky and got it good, chip in gas or a coffee to the volunteers in Maine supporting our neighbors to make sure they get groceries, diapers and due process at this time in which the freedom to access this joy is especially unequally spread. Thanks, and thanks winter, and thanks pals for making midweek skiing as adults with a lot going on a reality.

Some moments from our film ‘The Chase’ featuring backcountry guide and all around ripper @blakekeogh as he navigates the harsh New England winters while living out of his vintage camper. If you haven’t seen the film, link in bio!
