I call this series “Elemental Eternals”

Ink and Alcohol Marker on 8.5x11 copy paper.

“Elemental Eternals” acknowledges the permanence of death and that this life is our one opportunity for defining who we are. So we should joyously be ourselves, bright and shining and even whimsical.

The title of each drawing is a periodic element with medicinal purpose in their naturally occuring, raw forms:

“Barium” is opaque on X-Rays and can be used to diagnose gastrointestinal blockages.

“Iodine” helps block radioactive material from being absorbed by the thyroid, lowering future chances of cancer.

“Lithium” is used to treat mood disorders such as bipolar disorder.

“Nitrogen” is used to cryogenically freeze tissue (not a raw form, but nitrous oxide is also a common anesthetic).

“Helium” is essential in cooling the hard working magnets of MRI machines to nearly absolute zero.

Each element does something important and positive and healing that none of the others can do precisely because each of them is totally different. Each element remains distinct and unique while contributing to the great dance of life. We, too, are distinct and unique. Our wide spectrum of experience is an opportunity for collaboration and lifting each other up. Each of us has the power to affect the world around us positively in our own different ways. By nurturing ourselves, we may enrich the universe.

Happy #Pride and thank you to @thesupermarket.atl and @thebakeryatlanta for this gallery opportunity.

Some casual snaps from sunny Moab, Utah! Went hiking with the fam, saw many lizards, and even more canyons. The hot desert landscapes of the southwest do great things to me. taken in Moab, Utah by @blakepipes

I took a bit of a nature bath this past weekend, hiking several trails, basking in the light and shadows of the forest, and even climbing a mountain. As always, these immersive forays into the woods are a very grounding experience, with the mountain climb being the clear highlight of the bunch. I will not soon forget the feeling of the strong wind as I walked out onto the rock which hung over the mountain's clifftop nor will I forget the softly given humility of the arduous climb which preceded such a view (pretty words for “I forgot to bring a water bottle and didn’t wear the right shoes and oh my god it really is all uphill”). I find great peace in the quiet growth of the natural world around us. by @blakepipes

Some recent close ups of Earth! 🌍 These photos have all manner of flowers and bugs but I would like to mention that the first photo is of a Milkweed Assassin Bug, which has one of the coolest names in the animal kingdom.

I am always eager to celebrate Earth Day as it is the kind of holiday that should be every day. The earth is such a treasure for us and every other living creature. I am always amazed by how much diversity there is on this planet, the ways that it all coexists together, and simply how beautiful it is to take in the sunshine, the flowers, and everything else. There is always more to explore and we are so lucky to be here and call this place home! taken in Earth by @blakepipes

This is a preview of my photographs (and their titles) currently on display as part of the In Focus exhibition presented by @thebakeryatlanta at @thesupermarket.atl .

The theme of the group exhibition is "Consumption". You may notice the four photographs of mine that are chosen do not contain any natural elements--no trees, no grass, no flowers, no animals. Each of these scenes are man-made.

With that in mind, I invite you to consider the impact humanity has in our relationship with the earth, especially in the last few hundred years as we have industrialized and consumed at unprecedented rates.

Open now through Sunday with a closing reception 12pm-4pm on Sunday. taken in The Supermarket by @blakepipes

In celebration of the "rapture" this week, here's a church outside of Montgomery, Alabama that would have you believe the rapture is always happening tomorrow. The fire and brimstone approach always comes across more scary and unhinged than informative. Doesn't this place seem so inviting? (sarcasm)

I will be so bold as to say we'll get through this week and even the next one. Let's all just keep living and find out. ✨ taken in Montgomery, Alabama by @blakepipes
