Lamin Fofana’s @lamin.mp3 new album Corps Perdu is out October 16th on Shelter Press @shelter_press .

“Corps Perdu presents an introspective journey with no return, and as such is full of omens of all kinds.” Across ten tracks, Fofana creates a shifting landscape of melodies, rhythms, field recordings and dense processing, inspired in part by Aimé Césaire’s Corps Perdu and the writings of Edouard Glissant, Sylvia Wynter, Fred Moten and others.

On Saturday, October 17 at 7pm, École du soir is pleased to host Preludes: To Become Liquid, a performance by Lamin Fofana @lamin.mp3 . It takes place as a listening and collective reading program within an immersive sound environment informed and inspired by the reading, the density and the richness of the concepts, histories and possibilities of Black Studies. The evening will mark the release of Corps Perdu, Fofana’s new album emerging from his ongoing engagement with the relationship between sound and text.

In To Become Liquid, Fofana offers a multisensory listening space in which performance, collective reading, and open dialogue converge, with the aim of generating an environment of critical reverie. Throughout the evening, pages or fragments from works by seminal historians, poets, and theorists including W. E. B. Du Bois, Sylvia Wynter, and Aimé Césaire are circulated among the audience. Everyone is invited to read aloud at any moment, and to cultivate an active, collaborative space that resists disengaged modes of reception and fosters instead a shared and attentive participation.

The performance is co-presented with Lamin Fofana’s record label BLACK STUDIES @blast.rtf , and it launches Fofana’s and BLACK STUDIES inaugural residency at École du Soir Workroom, playing host to mutual collaborations between Fofana and École du soir that will extend into convening, production, programming, and learning experiments.

Please email workroom@ecoledusoir.org to RSVP. by @blast.rtf

BLACK STUDIES debut on @nts_radio tonight.

6pm NYC, 12am Amsterdam.

Another approach to radio-making. Integrating WhatsApp & Voice Notes. Friends and collaborators send in drops, voice notes, and whatnot. I stitch the pieces together. This collaborative approach I hope makes for intriguing radio.

On this episode, I’m joined by Mohammed Tatour, an Amsterdam-based Palestinian artist. We contemplate Adania Shibli’s Minor Detail, language, and untranslatability. Special selections featuring music by Taymour x Bareetlblad, Kiss Facility, HAAi with James Massiah, Wadada Leo Smith, Vijay Iyer, Surya Botofasina, and more.

THE OPEN BOAT is available now on Bandcamp c/o BLACK STUDIES

« And returning myself to the West Indies in 1962, I became aware that the islands themselves were as much geographical extensions of Africa as they were Atlantic outriders and off-shoots of the American continent. There was, in fact, a remarkable physical and meteorological link with West Africa largely ignored by or invisible to geographers and totally missing from our common consciousness. It was this: in December to about February every year, a drought visits the islands. The green canefields take the golden deciduous crispness of scorched parchment. The blue sky burns muted. The dry air rivets the star nights with metallic cold. It is our tropical winter. This dryness, unexplained, is put down to “lack of rain.”
But living in St. Lucia at this time, I watched this drought drift in towards the island, moving in across the ocean from the east, obscuring Martinique, obscuring sails beating towards Castries. And I suddenly realized that what I was witnessing - that milky haze, that sense of dryness - was something I had seen and felt before in Ghana. It was the seasonal dust-cloud, drifting out of the great ocean of Sahara - the harmattan. By an obscure miracle of connection, this Arab’s nomad wind, cracker of Fante wood a thousand miles beyond, did not die on the seashore of West Africa, its continental limit; it drifted on, reaching the New World archipelago to create our drought, imposing an African season on the Caribbean sea. And it was these winds too, and in this season, that the slave ships came from Guinea, bearing my ancestors to this other land.
And so the poem grew… »
