Every year, Design in Bloom reminds us why we love being part of Denver’s design community. A night where we come together not only to celebrate each other’s successes, but more importantly, to connect over the challenges, setbacks, and realities that exist behind creative work.

This year’s piece, A Delicate Balance, explored the human instinct to hold everything together. Two monolithic forms appear suspended in a moment of near imbalance—a reflection of the quiet pressures that often exist beneath a composed surface. In both creative work and daily life, the fracture is not a failure, but the place where growth becomes visible.

Created in collaboration with our sister studio, @raw_creative , the installation was fabricated from pigmented GFRC concrete and steel.

The event also marked the public debut of @modterra , our newest venture. Designed by our studio and handcrafted in Denver, Modterra is a collection of concrete sinks and objects inspired by the landscapes and forms of the American West.

If you haven’t checked it out already, we’d love for you to take a look. We have a lot of new designs, textures, and ideas currently in development, and we’re excited to share what’s next.

Thanks to @modernindenver for another great event. by @bld_studio_

…Bike Hub continued. Section model and concrete fabrication process at Raw Creative…52 custom cast GFRC panels, meant to mimic a weaving pattern, hang from a structural steel frame allowing light and air to enter and exit the structure.

Ground breaking for Plaza of the Americas, where Bike Hub is located, happening next week! A few years in the making, we’re excited to see this come to life.

Like Plaza of the Americas being an amalgamation of culture, where locals and tourists have woven together since Denver’s inception, Bike Hub is an amalgamation of parts. Part functional bike storage, part art installation.

Inspired by the sculptural modular facades of Erwin Hauer, cast perforated concrete panels designed to mimic a weaving pattern hang from metal struts, allowing light and air to pass through the structure. A ceramic mural at the entrance by Ana Maria Hernando invites passersby to pause for a moment, providing a colorful backdrop to an area of constant movement.

This project has been a huge labor of love and we are excited to finally see it take form. Huge thanks to our partners and collaborators for helping bring it all together.

One of the biggest misconceptions about the field of architecture is that it’s only an art, that the profession simply fills the interstitial space between the spark of an idea and something real, tangible, and buildable. People often only see the end product, and rarely is the curtain pulled back to reveal the many steps it took to get from point A to point C.

It is true that architects do fill that space, and that’s really where the magic of a project lies. Where ideas can run wild before being rooted in reality. But that’s not the entire story, especially when you have a fabrication shop at your fingertips.

Bike Hub is one project we are really excited to pull the curtain back on. Where narrative, ingenuity, and built reality come together to tell a whole story.

Before even starting the design of Bike Hub, we were immediately struck by the idea of weaving. Its location, Plaza of the America’s, is a cultural crossroads where locals and tourists weave together. The heat map pulled from logged Strava bike routes in the same area further reinforces that idea, revealing movement and connection, people quite literally weaving together.

So how do we take this ā€˜idea’ and form it into something tangible? Stay tuned, there’s a lot more to come on this project. taken in bld studio by @bld_studio_

That’s a wrap on @aurummaui! From the slopes of Colorado to the islands of Hawaii — congratulations to our longtime friends and partners @destinatiohospitality on unveiling another destination jewel. We can’t wait to visit for the full experience and toast with a cocktail by the ocean. Photos coming soon.

Sometimes less is really more. When designing a 1,000-square-foot, 2 bed, 2 bath house, every inch counts. Our Meadowood project was placed on the site to take full advantage of usable outdoor space while preserving original views of the main house.

This net-zero ADU in Aspen/Snowmass is all about smart design. Skylights and full-height glazing around the perimeter of the open-plan living area maximize views and natural light, providing gracious living between outdoors and interior, while thoughtful storage solutions keep the compact footprint feeling open.

When designing a living space this size, collaboration with the client is key to creating a home that is functional for everyday life while offering a place to slow down, recharge, and feel at home.

An important part of any architectural process is visiting the site to draw and gather information that will guide the design. Visiting the site early on not only offers insight into the more technical aspects of designing — how the sun moves across the site throughout the day and season, the slope and character of the land, the qualities of the soil, or which directions hold the best views and moments of quiet — but also into the subtler inspiration that can shape the project in unexpected ways. It might come from the lobed edges of foliose lichen, the striking color of an errant feather, or the way leaves and branches fall and scatter across the ground.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

Good, thoughtful design often goes to waste when designer and builder aren’t in sync. Ideas get watered down, details fall through the cracks, and the final product suffers.

At bld, we’re committed to designing and building innovative work that not only tells a story unique to its user, but also stands the test of time. That’s why our sister fabrication studio—and our years of experience in general contracting—are integral to everything we do.

The collaboration between architecture, construction, and fabrication creates an exchange of ideas that pushes us to achieve something greater than we ever could on our own.

We’re well into summer, so we’re revisiting colder days at our Treehaus project. Set in a dense forest overlooking Steamboat, the cantilevered design provides both intimacy and expansive views of the valley.

We’ve come a long way since then… client move in and final photos on deck.

A couple months back, we were fortunate enough to be a part of this year’s Design in Bloom event—hosted by @modernindenver at @roomandboard. A friendly competition where local designers craft innovative and unique floral displays. As usual, a good time was had, everyone brought their best, and we left with new friends and plenty of inspiration.

This year, our piece evoked Mujo—the Japanese concept of impermanence and the fleeting nature of all things.

The basalt stone, found in Carbondale, with its irregular texture and organic form, reflects the enduring beauty of nature. In contrast, a cast concrete element—made by our sister fabrication studio @raw_creative—slices through with clean, deliberate geometry: our human impulse to define, control, and shape the environment around us.

The space between the two becomes a moment of stillness, a quiet threshold where nature and human intention meet. As time passes, the materials will weather and evolve, reinforcing the idea that all things, even the most solid forms, are subject to change.

This is the essence of Mujo-kan—where the coexistence of stone and concrete reflects not only their physical transformation, but the deeper understanding that impermanence is inherent to all things—an invitation to appreciate the beauty of the present moment.

Process and the evolution of a design. Here are some early conceptual sketches for a new project in Fairplay. Like every project we start, the surrounding landscape plays a crucial role in shaping the questions we ask ourselves that lead to the final design.

Our creative process is an unfolding story of people, place, and purpose. Constantly exploring and refining ideas into tangible forms that are rooted in deep connection to their surroundings. by @bld_studio_
