It was a room full of people sharing real stories about vision loss, disability, resilience, accessibility, and community.

We brought together the blind and visually impaired community, advocates, allies, and local business professionals for a happy hour focused on connection and inclusion on beautiful Mission Bay.

Cane shame is real and I carried that weight until I flipped the script entirely. Now that cane is an ignited lightsaber, The Force is guiding every step, and this journey moves with pure Jedi Master energy. I am powerful three hundred sixty five days a year beyond any diagnosis or label, but Global Blindness Awareness Month is the perfect time to amplify this light. 👩‍🦯✨

Happy Blindness Awareness Month! 👁️🫦🚫💅💜Yep. @mr.drunkz963 named “RYAN GARCIA.” I can type 😌 Blindness and low vision aren’t always total blindness. There are different levels and types of vision loss—some people have central vision, some peripheral, some blurry vision, some blind spots/rings/lines, and some have no usable vision at all…….
Blind doesn’t always mean zero vision. There are different levels and types of vision loss—mine happens to be a blind ring/halo around the central vision I still have. With remaining parts of vision in peripherals in both eyes with a blind line in my right eye I was born with. 👁️✨ Thank you for asking. “October marks Global Blindness Awareness Month, so it feels appropriate to share this update now. It has been a pretty tumultuous time, beginning with losing the remainder of my usable vision back in March and needing an unexpected eye surgery in May that has been extremely difficult to recover from—and one 1 am still actively working through. I’m happy to say that I’m adjusting, feeling a bit better, and getting back to feeling like myself. This has easily been the most difficult chapter of my vision loss journey, but it has taught me so much. Especially as a control freak, I’ve learned that while I may not have control over what happens to me, I always have control over how l respond. It’s also taught me a whole new level of patience with myself and my circumstances.
I am infinitely grateful for my amazing husband, friends, and family who have carried me through this difficult time. Without their support, there’s no way I could have made it through. In typical fashion, even while recovering, I’ve been staying busy behind the scenes! I’ve delivered a couple of speaking engagements, tinished the entire curriculum for learning Braille, continued serving as the Orange County Chapter President for the Foundation Fighting Blindness, and taken on treelance digital accessibility consulting work. I even have some more exciting speaking engagements lined up for the new year-something I never imagined I’d do, but I’m truly excited to share my journey with the world. Stay tuned, and bear with me as I learn to navigate Instagram with no sight!” We can all learn soooo much from this bright soul. May she continue to bless and light up all roles she is in and vibrate 1,000 times. Blinding anyone with her shine. Please make sure to go send her lots of love, support and hugs. We’re here for you Marissa. Always and forever.

These situations are soo heartbreaking. @seeing.it.my.way is going through vision loss, living with blindness and no doctors have diagnosed her yet. She needs resources and help and this is what reaching out to the @fightblindness organizations in your area are soo important. Make sure you get your genetic testing done, you may have a progressive degenerative eye condition they aren’t telling you. Look further from your primary doctors and ask for authorizations to get genetic testing done by a retina specialist. Or to be seen by one.
