Block Universe also worked with @egle_budvytyte in 2020, bringing Incantation Karaoke to @quozartsfest @alserkalavenue Dubai.

Springing from ecofeminist ideas and finding its power in song, the performance channels multiple beings bruised by modernity: plants and animals, bacteria and fungi shaped through rhyme, rhythm, repetition, and vulnerable presence. An invitation to the audience to collectivity and singing.

Performed at Concrete, the OMA-designed building at Alserkal Avenue. Originally commissioned by Kiasma Theater @kiasmatheatre Helsinki.

Eglė now brings animism sings anarchy to the Lithuanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, curated by Block Universe Founding Director @louise_okelly. Opening 9 May.

With @egle_budvytyte bringing a new work to the Lithuanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, we look back at our 2017 collaboration: Choreography for the Running Male.

A group of men jog a route through the city in unison, performing choreographed gestures that move between shame and seduction, vulnerability and militaristic action. The work asks what happens when socialised behaviour is made visible and when gendered bodies begin to act beyond expectation.

Eglė now presents animism sings anarchy at the Lithuanian Pavilion, curated by Block Universe Founding Director @louise_okelly . Opening 9 May.

“I am back at Delfina Foundation after two years of delay due to the pandemic to realize Slalom. When I arrived at the beginning of May, I first felt like the city had changed but later on understood that it was me who had changed. The piece was initially inspired by the fact that the world as we know it is coming to an end due to the climate crisis, asking questions on how to take care of and put into use the accumulated knowledge kept in archives in a short amount of time. The conditions of the pandemic brought our lives to a stand still. We could not predict the future. Revisiting Slalom with that actual experience has widened my perspective. I feel I am more in my body and more open.”

Words from the artist Sena Başöz (@senabasoz)

Join us to see her performance ‘Slalom’ at the Wellcome Collection (@wellcomecollection) on:

If you didn't receive the last edition of You've Got Mail! in your mailbox, check out artist Brad Darkson's contribution via the link in our bio.

This month, the artist Brad Darkson shares with us a series of drawings and collages that summarise some of his interests and current research, that include hostile architecture, bureaucracy, seaweed, and the 'neo-capitalist hellhole we're all forced to exist within' (in his own words). Darkson's practice is regularly focused on site specific works, and connections between contemporary and traditional cultural practice, language and lore. Conceptually Darkson's work is often informed by his First Nations and Anglo Australian heritage.

If you didn’t receive the seventh edition of You’ve Got Mail! in your mailbox, check out artist Ammar Al Attar (@ammaralattar_new )’s contribution on our website via the 🔗 link in our bio.

Ammar Al Attar shares with us a selection of sketches from his notebook planning and documenting performances enacted over the past two years in the UAE, where he is based. Inspired by early durational performance art, Al Attar pushes the limits of his body’s capacity to enact seemingly repetitive, banal tasks. Via these acts of repetition, Al Attar makes a critique of the worker’s experience by examining the mundane tools and tasks that are emblematic of a bureaucratic existence.

Image description: The image we see is a taken from one of Ammar’s sketches. It shows two photos, one of him wrapping a very long yellow cloth around a tree and the other you see the cloth surrounding ther tree trunks in a desert landscape. Surrounding the image are Ammar's notes written in Arabic.
