Daria Blum is a London-based Swiss Canadian visual artist, performer and musician. She interweaves personal history with common experiences, choreographing voice, music, live performance and moving image in order to examine contemporary value systems, focussing on archetypal emotions and the politics surrounding their expression and reception in contemporary culture and media. Both her studio and her flat are undergoing renovations, and she is currently covered in white dust.

“I am back at Delfina Foundation after two years of delay due to the pandemic to realize Slalom. When I arrived at the beginning of May, I first felt like the city had changed but later on understood that it was me who had changed. The piece was initially inspired by the fact that the world as we know it is coming to an end due to the climate crisis, asking questions on how to take care of and put into use the accumulated knowledge kept in archives in a short amount of time. The conditions of the pandemic brought our lives to a stand still. We could not predict the future. Revisiting Slalom with that actual experience has widened my perspective. I feel I am more in my body and more open.”

Words from the artist Sena Başöz (@senabasoz)

Sena Başöz (Turkey) is an artist and filmmaker based in Istanbul. Her work investigates healing processes after cases of trauma focusing on regeneration possibilities of what is frozen, dead, stale or lost. The organism’s self-repair and the balance nature obtains in the long run constitute the backbone of the narratives she employs in her works. Her recent work delves into what can be preserved in the face of flux.

During the 2018 edition of the Block Universe festival, Jamila Johnson-Small (@lastyerzinterestingnegro) and Sara Sassanelli (@sara.sassanelli) hosted HOTLINE. An itinerant space for provocations & opinions, beyond your bedroom, books, bad journalism and your social media feed, HOTLINE sought to be a critical space for discussion and disagreements, not an artist talk. This particular edition presented Season Butler (@season_butler), Evan Ifekoya (@evan_ife) and Harun Morrison (@theyarehereyeah ).

In an informal and inclusive discussion people were invited to reflect on why we do what we do, how the particular logics are formed that drive and direct decisions/actions/tastes and art-making. The event explored shifting needs provoked by the contemporary condition and sought for ways to collectively re-organise and think through conversation, to encourage generative exchange and live encounters that can serve to activate bold creative action.

This special project was hosted at Protein Studios (@proteinstudios) in Shoreditch.

✨Block Universe Highlights✨: In 2017 Young In Hong (@youngin_hong_) premiered her performance ‘5100: Pentagon’ at The Royal Academy of Arts (@royalacademyarts)!

The choreographed movements of ‘5100: Pentagon’ were inspired by collected archival images relating to the Gwangju uprising on 18 May 1980, and were set to an adapted version of the 1980s demonstration song, ‘A Song of May’.

Each performance is constructed based on a web-tutorial that can be accessed by any participants with no restrictions on age, gender or performing experience. This project brought to light an unexplored period in history as an intensive moment, performed repetitively yet differently by voluntary participants in every new iteration.

5100: Pentagon is a project by Young In Hong in collaboration with choreographers Ann So-Hee Mannik Kristiansen and Sarah Louise Kristiansen (@sarahlouisebk), this piece was made possible with the support of Bath Spa University (@bathspauni) and Gaia Art Foundation (@gaiaartfoundation).

✨Block Universe Highlights✨: In the 2018 edition of the Block Universe festival, Hanne Lippard performed ‘Reading’- a piece commissioned in partnership with Somerset House (@somersethouse) and supported by Goethe Institute (@goetheinstitute). In addition to the performance, we also hosted a talk with Hanne Lippard (@Hanoi_Lizard) and curator Vanessa Boni. Hanne Lippard is a British Norwegian artist based in Berlin who focuses on the production of language solely through the use of voice. In performances, installations, videos and audio pieces, she arranges, composes and combines her own wordplays with words by others. Fragments from everyday speech, sourced from various online platforms were used in this piece and then constantly reworked through the use of repetition, pronunciation and rhythm. Phrases and images associated with contemporary topics such as work, success, and lifestyles were evoked. By merging content and form and through a gentle rhyme, her vivid words began to lose their prescribed value and modify to take on new meanings. With an almost hypnotic, cleansing approach, the vocal sequences sink into the listener’s mind and create a free-form, associative pattern of melodic, linguistic formulas.
