SYDNEY - for one night only, California Girls will launch the new album Wheel of Ashes in band format, playing a newly arranged, “deconstructed, raw + semi-blackened post-punk” version of the album in full. Taking place at THE CHIPPO on DECEMBER 19, California Girls’ band is comprised of Sydney’s sexiest: Darren Lesaguis of @perfect.actress and @w0rlds0nly on guitar, Carmen of @scum.noise and @hunnyhardcore on bass, and the singular Christian @grasps_ on drums. Also performing is dark ambient noise lord @obelisk__.__ playing a solo set, and another mysterious act soon to be revealed… by @blue____void

CALIFORNIA GIRLS - Wheel of Ashes Out today on CD and digital. Ex-Canberra, current Gadi resident Angus McGrath returns with his genre-manic electronic music project California Girls’ third full-length Wheel of Ashes. Arriving five years after the high octane treatment of queer desire on Beat Boy (2020, Dero Arcade) Wheel of Ashes zooms out for a work of gothic horror about the search for meaning in the contemporary moment of hypermedia and accelerationist doom. As Gus explains: "I have a great life that I love and yet I still feel this sense of dread emanating from everything. Yes, it’s mostly anxiety, but I found myself really connecting with this existentialism as it appeared in Ingmar Bergman films. I wanted to explore my feelings of doom and found that as a way in, especially building from Bergman’s film The Seventh Seal. The central character in this film is a knight in the crusades who is faced with the living embodiment of Death, but still refuses to place faith in God because that still can’t explain all the cruelty and madness he had seen. In this spiritual introspection though, I do not turn to or contemplate the Christian God, but rather think about the spiritual more generally." McGrath’s aggressively hybrid brand of electronic music now takes a dark turn, elevating industrial, hardcore techno, hardcore punk, black metal, internet rap and pop influences to an operatic and dread-filled drama. The scale is also ramped up here – named after a 1968 film starring unhinged French dreamboat Pierre Clementi (a vector of obsession on second single “Sweet Song”) McGrath’s cinematic influences bleed into Wheel of Ashes’ imagery-dense and melodramatic evocation of an apocalyptic now. by @blue____void
