You don’t have to love every part of interior design. Maybe you’re the designer who loves the materials, the furnishings, the client relationships, and the creative vision. Maybe you’re the person who loves CAD, construction documentation, technical details, and figuring out how things are built. Neither side is more important than the other. The great project needs both.

So name honestly which half is yours, and then go get the other half through education, collaboration, outsourcing, or the right team. That’s not a weakness. That’s smart design management and smart business management. by @blue_skycreative

My childhood church reached out with the most humble request.

“Can you make the entrance more welcoming and cover the path so our guests don’t get wet in the rain”?

This church is special to me.

My great grand father built this church with his own two hands.

My uncle wired the electrical.

My grandmother started and led the graveyard committee. She raised money to buy gravestones for those without one.

This church knocked on my door when my mom was diagnosed with cancer.

The church secretary left work early just this week to drive my mom to her treatment appointment.

So yeah, I was honored to be asked to design the new entrance.

We developed two concepts and handed off complete construction documentation and 3D renderings.

Now they have everything they need to get bids, permits and donations.

I hope to enter through the new entrance soon 💙 by @blue_skycreative

If you shuddered reading this, just know that technical design, documentation and good practices fix ALL of these.

Technical design isn’t some hard-to-obtain “goal”.

It’s simply part of the design process.

At some point residential design became way too loosey -goosey.

You don’t need an ID degree, 10 years of experience or a huge budget to hire a Technical Designer.

But whether you work with @blue_skycreative or someone else, you do need to implement technical design or eventually you’re going to run into these fire situations.

It should be your standard.

We’re often asked, “Can we just skip the drawings?”

Usually, the answer is no.

Blue-Sky Creative is a technical design firm first and a visualizer second.

Our job is to take your design intent and make it build-ready.

Not presentation-ready.
Build-ready.

Follow me here for a minute.

I spent years working in themed entertainment, where we hired a 3D artist to create concepts for a walk-through attraction.

The artist created these beautiful, white, shiny walls and floors.

It looked incredible.

It also wasn’t practical at all.

The problem? The client had already fallen in love with the concept.

To us, it was a concept. A piece of art used to communicate an idea.

To the client, it was much more literal.

Once they saw it, they expected the finished space to look exactly like that.

And that’s one of the reasons we approach renderings differently.

As a technical design firm, we want to help you see your design intent come to life without creating a visual that your client falls in love with before the design is actually figured out.

So we start with the drawings.

We work through the details, nail down the design intent, and make sure the idea actually works.

Then we create the 3D rendering based on the drawings.

That way, the pretty picture isn’t just pretty.

It’s grounded in something that can actually be built.

And speaking of pretty pictures… 😍

It was SO fun creating this tree limb design for a pediatric dentist with @dm2furnishings.

We used this exact method and the DM2 team was able to execute the tree to absolute perfection. by @blue_skycreative

Interior designers love the beautiful, creative side of the work. They love choosing materials, working with clients, selecting furnishings, and bringing a vision to life. But when a project moves into renovation, remodeling, or new construction, another side of interior design becomes just as important: the technical side.

I see this gap often, especially with designers who are moving from decorating and furnishing into more complex residential or commercial projects. You may be confident in your aesthetic skills but feel intimidated by construction documentation, building drawings, space planning, technical details, or understanding how everything will actually be built. And if that technical knowledge wasn’t a major focus of your interior design education or career, it can become a real weak spot.
