NEW!! Jessica Marchant is the Founder of @blue_skycreative, a technical design firm that supports Interior Designers with build-ready drawings and documentation. After more than a decade working in the design, build, and fabrication industry, Jessica noticed a major gap. Many Interior Designers either didn’t have the time, training, or desire to produce detailed technical drawings in-house, which often created friction between designers and contractors during construction. Jessica founded Blue-Sky Creative to bridge that gap. Her team translates design intent into clear, easy-to-follow construction drawings and documentation so Interior Designers can take on more complex projects with confidence and create a smoother experience for both clients and contractors. In addition to leading Blue-Sky Creative, Jessica also provides 1:1 consulting for Interior Designers and Design Build professionals who need strategic support navigating complex design details, construction challenges, and project execution. Comment “POD” to watch/listen to this lovely chat!

You don’t have to love every part of interior design. Maybe you’re the designer who loves the materials, the furnishings, the client relationships, and the creative vision. Maybe you’re the person who loves CAD, construction documentation, technical details, and figuring out how things are built. Neither side is more important than the other. The great project needs both. So name honestly which half is yours, and then go get the other half through education, collaboration, outsourcing, or the right team. That’s not a weakness. That’s smart design management and smart business management.

When you bring the aesthetic and technical sides together—and when your designer, technical team, and GC are all communicating clearly—you give the project a much stronger foundation.

Interior designers love the beautiful, creative side of the work. They love choosing materials, working with clients, selecting furnishings, and bringing a vision to life. But when a project moves into renovation, remodeling, or new construction, another side of interior design becomes just as important: the technical side. I see this gap often, especially with designers who are moving from decorating and furnishing into more complex residential or commercial projects. You may be confident in your aesthetic skills but feel intimidated by construction documentation, building drawings, space planning, technical details, or understanding how everything will actually be built. And if that technical knowledge wasn’t a major focus of your interior design education or career, it can become a real weak spot. In this episode, Jessica Marchand and I talk about exactly why this matters and what you can do about it. Interior design is really two distinct crafts—the aesthetic craft and the technical craft—and great projects happen where those two worlds meet. You don’t have to be brilliant at both. But the work does.

The Spec Book: You’ve probably heard of it but what is it really? The Spec Book is basically the contractor’s cheat sheet for the design. Once the design is finalized, I pull all of the selections together in one place. Plumbing fixtures, lighting, tile, flooring, paint colors, hardware, appliances, finishes, and all of those little details that are very easy to lose track of during a build. It tells the contractor exactly what was selected, where it goes, and the information they need to order and install it correctly. A good Spec Book keeps everyone on the same page, cuts down on questions and guesswork, and helps make sure the design we planned is actually what gets built. So excited to hand this one over!

Thinking of outsourcing your drawings & 3d renderings? 🤔 Trust your gut when interviewing! You *should* be able to read, understand, and explain the drawings. If the drawings -- or the communication style of the person you're thinking of hiring -- make your job harder instead of easier, keep looking. It's an important hiring choice -- you'll know if you've found "the one." ✨ EPISODE 13! "YOU DON'T WANT TO SHOW UP TO THE JOBSITE WITH JUST A MOODBOARD." 😬 TRUTH! 🔥 Moodboards are useful, but NOT when it's time to demo and build. 😂 🤪 Were you taught to do technical drawings in school? Have you ever considered outsourcing your drawings & 3d renderings? ✨ EPISODE 13! "IF I NEVER SEE AUTOCAD AGAIN, IT'LL BE TOO SOON." 😂 No one appreciates the amount of technical drawing we designers have to do, but SOMEONE has to do it, or we're gambling with the project outcome, our client's happiness, and our company's reputation. That said, maybe YOU don't have to be the one doing it... CHICKEN BONES?!?!? 😂 Jessica cracked me up with that example lol. But I love her point - the design is between the designer and the homeowner - she's just here to make sure the ideas are buildable. 💪 Have you ever considered outsourcing your drawings & 3d renderings? 🤔 ✨ EPISODE 13!
