When Cara Murphy opened Blue Jay Listening Room (@bluejayjax) in a nondescript building off Jacksonville Beach’s Third Street, she knew she was creating a community.

Now, with names like JJ Grey and Sierra Ferrell as past headliners, Blue Jay has become a venue where, “once you go, it’s the only place you’ll ever want to see live music again,” writes Flamingo Editor in Chief Jamie Rich.

John Prine would have turned 80 today, and we can’t think of a better way to spend that night than playing his songs with friends.

A mail carrier from Maywood, Illinois, Prine started out singing at open mics in Chicago and became one of the most beloved songwriters America has ever had. He wrote about lonely people, small towns, broken hearts and the funny parts of being alive, and he made all of it sound easy.

To mark his birthday, a group of Northeast Florida’s finest songwriters and players will take turns with the Prine songbook: Sasha & Jeremiah French, Abigail and Andre Gruber, Patrick Hagerman, Jesse Loose, Joshua Reilly, and Chris Underdal. Expect the classics, a few deep cuts, and the kind of stories and harmonies that only show up when good friends play together.

Bring someone who loves these songs as much as you do. Pour a glass, settle in and sing along softly. John would want it that way. taken in Blue Jay Listening Room by @bluejayjax

The Lee Boys aren’t just a band. They’re a full-body experience.

Rooted in the sacred steel tradition, this Miami family ensemble blends gospel fervor, hard-driving funk, and blues grit into something that makes a room forget it was ever sitting down. They’ve played Bonnaroo, Jazz Fest, and stages alongside B.B. King, Robert Plant, and Mavis Staples.

At Blue Jay, they’ll be close enough to feel it. taken in Blue Jay Listening Room by @bluejayjax

Few musicians in any genre are spoken about with the reverence reserved for David Grier. A three-time IBMA Guitar Player of the Year and one of the most influential flatpick guitarists alive, Grier grew up immersed in Bluegrass history through his father Lamar Grier’s work with Bill Monroe and the legendary Blue Grass Boys.

Drawing inspiration from icons like Clarence White, Tony Rice, and Doc Watson, Grier developed a singular style that has shaped generations of acoustic musicians. His career has included collaborations with artists such as Tim O’Brien, Victor Wooten, and the groundbreaking acoustic ensemble Psychograss.

Whether performing blazing instrumental runs or deeply expressive acoustic songs, David Grier represents the highest level of American roots musicianship. For guitar players, this is essential viewing. For everyone else, it’s a rare chance to witness one of the true masters of the instrument in an intimate listening room setting. taken in Blue Jay Listening Room by @bluejayjax

Rolling Stone calls award-winning Florida musician Selwyn Birchwood “a remarkable, contemporary bluesman…a powerhouse young guitarist and soulful vocalist.” Now, this mesmerizing guitarist, lap steel master and cinematic songwriter unleashes the powerful new self-produced album, Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues, further blazing his own musical trail.

Birchwood’s sound is an intoxicating mix of deep blues, blistering, psychedelic-tinged rock, booty-shaking funk and sweet Southern soul, played and sung with true blues passion. From an emotionally devastating whisper to a soul-baring scream, Birchwood’s vocals command attention. Schooled in the blues’ storied traditions (he toured with and was mentored by the famed Sonny Rhodes), Birchwood maps out a dazzling future for the blues with his visionary music.

“Selwyn Birchwood is one of the preeminent voices in contemporary blues. He plays like a man possessed…cleverly blending elements of traditional blues, funk, Stax-flavored R&B and psychedelic rock into a cohesive and compelling, expansive and cathartic artistic statement.” –Guitar Player

“Birchwood is one of contemporary blues’ foremost innovators. Funky, Southern-flavored electric blues…infectious rhythms and inventive soloing.” –Blues Music Magazine

“Selwyn Birchwood is one of the best blues players today. Ferocious blues guitar…powerful voice…blistering licks galore.” –Vintage Guitar taken in Blue Jay Listening Room by @bluejayjax
