Step inside one of Virginia’s most historic theaters!

Through our partnership with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), we traveled to Norfolk to explore the incredible story of the Attucks Theatre and the important role it has played in Virginia’s history.

Built in 1919 and designed by African American architect Harvey N. Johnson, the Attucks was financed, constructed, and operated by African Americans during an era of segregation. Known as the “Apollo of the South,” it became an important center for Black entertainment, business, and community life in Norfolk.

Its stage welcomed legendary performers including Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Ruth Brown, and Dizzy Gillespie. More than a century later, the Attucks continues to serve as a performing arts venue and a powerful reminder of Norfolk’s African American cultural heritage.

Take a look inside as we uncover the history, architecture, and legacy of this remarkable Virginia theater.
