We were delighted to see how many of you turned up at our label showcase last weekend at the House of Music Hungary, where our new compilation cassette — the Blue Sun VA III — made its debut.

Thank you! So far, the release has been getting a lot of positive feedback, and demand is high. So far, it’s the biggest release in the label’s catalogue: 19 super fine tracks spanning all the genres we adore, featuring both local newcomers and international bigshots.

RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT

Celebrating the label’s latest chapter, Blue Sun’s new compilation is the most ambitious release in the catalog so far: 19 acts (mostly Hungarian, with a few international favorites) curated into a seamless musical journey by Hanussen and Kozmo D. The palette spans downtempo, trip-hop, jazz, dub, balearica, ambient, experimental and electronica, genres that best describe the label’s boundary-free listening concept.

Curated with a ‘circular listening concept’, the tracks are arranged to form an endless auditory loop—wherever the journey begins. The orange side features more organic, higher-energy cuts, while the blue side drifts into deeper, more experimental territories. This is also the first release to showcase the label’s fresh visual identity, designed by Tóth Peti.

The compilation arrives on limited cassette (200 hand-numbered copies) and digitally. The cassettes will debut at the Blue Sun Showcase on 26 September at the Magyar Zene Háza, followed by gradual distribution to local and international stores. For casual listening and playlists, find it on all major streaming platforms from 21 September.

Hey everyone!

My previously unreleased electronic tune “Anthill”, which I recorded a few years ago while working on The Sea Will Outlive Us All, is now out on Blue Sun VA III, an underground compilation from Hungary. Very pleased to be part of it! Big thanks to the Blue Sun crew for inviting me. The compilation is available digitally and on tape. @bluesun.bp

P.S. A little update on Live in Leipzig and Berlin and Where the Birds Fly vinyl releases.

We’re hoping to hear from the pressing plant any day now that the records are ready. As soon as we receive them, we’ll start shipping all orders from @funknight and my Bandcamp.

NEW RELEASE IN THE CATALOGUE →

Erol Leen has grown up in Istanbul surrounded by sheets of classical music, jazz, and ragtime lying around. After moving to Amsterdam, his attention shifted toward traditional Turkish music - leading him on a journey with an old oud from his grandmother’s attic. His productions are greatly inspired by the Dutch ambient and jazz scene, with an emphasis on experimental club influenced releases from Music From Memory and Melody As Truth, Kuniyuki Takahashi, Greg Foat. He’s part of the Anatolian psychedelic electronic duo, Oh Voyage, a project that has taken him to stages across Europe through an intensive touring schedule over the past few years.

Budapest-based concept label Blue Sun arrives with the 3rd edition of their annual VA series, showcasing a colorful taste of the local underground music scene, with some international side notes.

For the occasion, the label is holding a casual listening session at GOZO, playing the entire compilation from cassette. They’ll be joined by artists from the compilation, Diamond Haze and VIM, who will play DJ sets before and after the listening session.

Cassettes will be available at a discounted price at the event.

ABOUT THE COMPILATION:
Following up on the label’s customs, the 19-track selection is not only released digitally, but also on a limited 200-piece cassette series. Curated by the label heads, the tracks follow Blue Sun's listening-oriented concept without genre restrictions with downtempo, trip-hop, jazz, dub, balearic, ambient, experimental, and electronica as highlights, with pieces that are more difficult to classify.

As before, instead of the usual A-B markings, the two sides are divided by the label's colors: “ORANGE” contains more organic and high-energy music, while “BLUE” contains more pensive and experimental tracks. Moreover, the selection has been carefully curated so that it can be listened to as an endless loop: the end of a side always resonates with the beginning of the other, wherever the listener begins.

The list of contributing artists this year is truly various and just as impressive. From unique debuting local artists to internationally recognised performers, it gives a taste of how the Hungarian underground scene sounds like at the moment.

DIAMOND HAZE:

Diamond Haze is a Budapest-based electronic project by Gábor and Milán, combining the background of a seasoned bassist with that of a vinyl-loving DJ. Their sound moves between downtempo and trip-hop, creating the kind of slow-burning fusion we very much appreciate at Blue Sun.

VIM:

VIM is a young artist working across music and visual arts. Her productions combine nature- and science-inspired electronic sounds with field recordings, processed vocals and sounds gathered from everyday life. taken in GOZO Listening Bar by @bluesun.bp

Blue Sun Radio Play vol. 47 by Vike, Budapest based underground DJ. Best known for her dance oriented sets, her selection is shaped by gradual movement. Fragments of voice, dub and leftfield electronics drift through the mix with a slow, persistent gravity, unfolding like the passing of a day. Music for the hours when the city has quieted down, but sleep still feels far away.

VA III artist introduction pt.4/4

From the depths of experimental ambient, the Blue Side slowly starts to loosen up, gets more playful through IDM motifs, and the final note comes from an indie dream pop piece, closing the circle — and setting the stage to start the Orange Side again.

Azami is a Budapest-based sound artist, DJ and live performer, co-founder of the Shifted Frequencies collective and founder of the Circling on the Horizon label and curatorial platform. Her work moves between experimental electronics, immersive atmospheres and deeply emotional sonic narratives, approaching sound as a space for feeling, reflection and transformation.

Another mysterious music creator from Budapest, M.I.R.I. is a saxophonist and producer making weird but melodic tunes somewhere between experimental and easy-listening. A strong musical message and vision from an artist we’re happy to introduce through the VA.

Zsuzsanna Spilák aka KalipS is a composer and interdisciplinary artist exploring the intersection of electroacoustic music, vocal experimentation and auditory perception. Classically trained in piano and voice, she later studied at Berklee College of Music and is currently studying Electronic Music Media Art at PTE. Her music combines classical musical language with electronic textures, field recordings and transformed vocals, creating intricate sonic spaces that unfold through attentive listening.

Christopher Waver aka Kristóf Huszár is one of the restless figures of Hungary’s electronic scene, active as a DJ, live performer, producer, bassist and keyboardist, as well as the founder of PLUTO Sound and co-founder of N° Space. For this collaboration, he joins forces with Budapest-based multimedia and sound artist Miraka, whose softly layered vocals create an honest, mystical and dark yet hopeful atmosphere. Together they bring two distinct approaches to sound into a shared, atmospheric space. by @bluesun.bp

mierik is one of the most mysterious musical phenomena we’ve discovered over the past year - no fame, no public performances, just top-notch production. This Budapest-based Slovak artist explores the nature of loops using the Launchpad as both instrument and playground. The result is carefully crafted, hypnotic music that almost sounds like a live band, despite being created from a very stripped-down setup.

Diamond Haze is a Budapest electronic project formed by Gábor and Milán, bringing together the backgrounds of a seasoned bassist and a vinyl-loving DJ. While Gábor’s musical journey started in high school bands, Milán’s eclectic record collection and DJ sets stretch from early trance to modern disco. Their shared sound lands somewhere between downtempo and trip-hop - exactly the kind of slow-burning fusion we very much appreciate at Blue Sun.

Silvio aka Route 8 is another local hero who played a major role in putting Budapest on the global electronic music map throughout the 2010s. After being discovered through SoundCloud by Lobster Theremin founder Jimmy Asquith, he became one of the prominent names on the label before founding his own imprint, This Is Our Time, and later working closely with Gestalt Records. With two Boiler Room appearances under his belt, he continues to move freely between moods and styles - this time bringing us a track from the slower, dubbier spectrum.

Vava is one of the fastest-growing new names on the local electronic scene, moving freely between ambient, trip-hop, house, bass music and hypnotic techno as a producer, DJ and live performer. He is currently studying Electronic Music and Media Arts at PTE, is one half of the duo Csodaszoba and helps organise the 4/4 event series. A few hallmarks of his sound: dub chor by @bluesun.bp

A maverick of the Budapest music scene, Filipvarial moves effortlessly between double bass, modular synths, electronic production and theatre scores. He is also known as a member of the internationally acclaimed Freakin’ Disco, while his work spans acoustic and electronic territories without much regard for the boundaries between them. His music is marked by melancholic and playful melodies, unusual textures and complex rhythmic patterns.

Szodé is the new project of Mészáros Ádám, one of the most adventurous Hungarian guitar players of the past two decades. His musical path has crossed pop-rock, free jazz and world music, with credits including Péterfy Bori & Love Band, Amorf Ördögök, Erik Sumo Band, Jü and Qiyan. Joined by Szabó-Sipos Ágoston, Horváth Ábel and Csernovszky Márton, Szodé brings these different musical worlds together into a fresh stylistic synthesis.

Misha Panfilov is an internationally renowned Estonian composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist known for his warm, analogue-driven cinematic sound. His immense portfolio moves freely across soul, jazz, funk, psychedelia and electronica, with a seemingly endless stream of albums, collaborations and genre-crossing experiments. A great honour to have such a prolific and distinctive artist featured on the VA.

VIM is a young artist from the local scene working across music and visual arts, with a particular interest in translating visual impressions and human emotions into sound through synesthesia. Her productions combine nature- and science-inspired electronic sounds with field recordings, processed vocals and sounds gathered from everyday life.

yibai aka Dávid Gerlei is one of the prominent figures of Hungary’s contemporary experimental ambient scene. A graduate of Electronic Music by @bluesun.bp
