The Office of Equity and Civil Rights kickstarted Baltimore's 2026 Civil Rights Week with the 33rd Annual Civil Rights Breakfast.

Joined by over 500 guests, the breakfast was hosted by @kalenallen and brought together advocates, changemakers, leaders, and more to celebrate Baltimore City's advancement in protecting human and civil rights.

With remarks from Mayor Brandon Scott, City Administrator Faith Leach, OECR Director Amber Greene, Senator Chris Van Hollen, Senator Angela Alsobrooks, and Congressman Kweisi Mfume, and presentations for the BCFD Honor Guard, Morgan State University Choir, and Puddin', the morning was eclectic.

A special thank you to our sponsors and partners who continue to champion the work of OECR: our Power Partner, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 24, and our Promise Holders: the Baltimore National Heritage Area, Baltimore-DC Metro Building Trades Council, Carpenters Local 197, and Kiewit Shea Tunnel Contractors.

After years of seeds planted, Baltimore just took another step in furthering food justice in our community.  Thank you @mayorbmscott and @iamphyliciaporter! 📜

Mayor Brandon Scott signed the Community Healthy Food Access Act into law.  This legislation, championed by Councilwoman Phylicia Porter, creates the Healthy Food Priority Area Grant Program, which will put real dollars behind the neighborhood grocers, co-ops, farmers’ markets, and mobile vendors bringing nutrient rich food to those that need it most.

The Black Church Food Security Network is grateful to have worked with Councilwoman Porter and many others to make this day happen.  At a time when federal and economic policies are making it harder to obtain healthy food, we are doing our part to make sure that our people eat, that farmers are paid and that we keep taking steps toward controlling our own food environment.

And we’re just getting started. Next stop: the state level. 👀
