“In this series, Barbetta Thompson circles in a dialogue between materials he deems sacred. Linen carries devotion while steel brings an extract of his hometown of Sheffield, industrial weight resting heavy on the shoulders. Wood is charred until new shapes take form, pushed through heat and pressure that leaves nothing but bone. Its ashes are used as pigment to form the paint for his photographic silkscreen works, rendering images from matter, ensnared in an endless cycle.
Italian Catholic heritage culminates inside this very burn, the ritualistic tension release dripping from fire and damnation. Brutal treatment leaves the hand and material as only remnants, with sentiment and ornament stripped from their surface as destruction breathes life into something so severe in its simplicity. Scorched markings rest into the quiet, as restraint begins to resemble freedom.” — @linnearm

Charred timber fence posts, steel
A memory of a sunken park fence. Charcoal pigment scraped from these burnt wood posts and many more, contribute to the paint used for my silkscreen works. Destruction breathes new life. An endless cycle. Labour before ornament.
