Hello IG board game community! Five years ago, I started sharing board games on Instagram as Board Game Dad, and I had no idea how meaningful this journey would become. I’m incredibly grateful for this amazing online board game community…the designers, publishers, creators, families, and fellow gamers who welcomed me, encouraged me, and shared their tables and stories along the way. Thank you for the conversations, the laughs, the recommendations, and the genuine kindness! Being part of this community has been a joy, and I’m so thankful to still be rolling dice, shuffling cards, and celebrating games with all of you.

I realize that I haven’t done an introductory post in awhile, so here we go! Time to meet the person behind @board.game.dad

My name is Alan and I live in Oregon, though I grew up in Georgia. I’ve been married for 22 years to my wonderful wife and I have two kiddos, a son and a daughter both in their teens.

I work at the university here in the College of Education teaching educators all over the world about classroom management and how to find patterns in behaviors in order to stop them before they happen. I also am involved in quite a bit of equity and inclusion work and research concerning disproportionate discipline for students of color, students who are learning English as a second language, and students with special needs. Before working at the university, I was an elementary school teacher for 11 years and had the rockingest classroom ever! 🤘🤘🤘

I just completed my doctorate degree in educational leadership back in 2023, which means I’m officially Dr. Board Game Dad now 🤭 Between work, traveling, and everything else a family of 4 gets to do during the week, my schedule can get pretty hectic, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

The ever changing game room :) it’s always a balance between trying to make things cozy and inviting without it feeling crowded and cluttered. I’m most likely going to get rid of the gray table since it takes up a lot of room and is rarely used at the moment. It definitely needs some organization, so if anyone is good at organizing and wants to play a bunch of games 😂 I’ll get pizza and drinks! It’ll be super productive! 😂 by @board.game.dad

Proof of life!

Hey there gamers! I’m still here and kickin… life has just been busy with work and starting back to school with a high school senior and a university junior in the house. I haven’t had a ton of time to play board games lately, but had a great D&D session one with my new character, and have been playing a little Baldurs Gate 3 and Helldivers 2 lately.

Even though I’m not posting every day, just remember that I love all of ya’ll and I hope you’re spreading joy and happiness in everything that you do! I wish ya all the smiles in the world 😊 🌎 by @board.game.dad

This has been my latest guilty pleasure… From the opening cinematic, it just screams over-the-top Starship Troopers style patriotism at all costs. And it pokes fun at itself the whole time. There are funny tips on the loading screens, hilarious ship names (mines the Patriot of Patriotism), and the messaging from Super Earth is always entertaining.

Then you get dropped into a mission, and all hell breaks loose immediately… fighting bots, aliens, or bugs. And each small battle that you win or lose adds up to massive overarching missions, with around 50,000 other players doing their duty to push back the bad guys. Big explosions, big firefights, and plenty of OMG moments. I’ve been playing with my son and we’ve been having a blast going through and trying new weapons and special abilities.

And it’s the complete opposite of a cozy relaxing kind of game. It’s fast, brutal, difficult, and really gets your adrenaline pumping every single time. My only complaint if there’s one to be made is that the economy system can feel a little grindy… but you’re constantly earning more credits and such in missions. And each time you crank up the difficulty, the bad guys get bigger and badder. But so do your weapons and tricks up your sleeve. by @board.game.dad

Shifting Stones and Delicious make for a chill gaming session!

In Shifting Stones, you’ll be shifting and flipping tiles to match goal cards in your hand. The trick is that it costs a goal card to manipulate a tile… so it’s a balancing act of knowing when to go for the lower point goals or saving up for a bigger one.

And Delicious is a fantastic little flip and write where players are planting fruits and veggies in their garden.

Tiny Epic Vikings from @gamelyngames is a fantastic little strategy game! With a mix of set collection, card drafting, and area control… players will be raiding and conquering while building up their village with the best warriors, explorers, builders, harvesters, etc.

And as with any tiny epic game, the artwork is fantastic, the component quality is amazing, and there’s much more in the box than meets the eye. by @board.game.dad
