UK board game fan- Play solo, with family and sometimes my husband when I can drag him along for the ride. DM for reviews/collabs
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Hi 👋 This is me Board Game Goode.

Well what a week it has been. This time last week my husband rolled his eyes for the gazillionth time that week as I uttered the words “oh I have just seen this board game….” So I started this page to find other people who might like to look at and chat about board games. I was expecting to find about 10 other people so I am amazed to have got 100 other like minded individuals in only a week (and I only actually know a couple of you and none of the 100 are my husband 🤣🙈) Thanks to everyone that has already said hi, commented and sent DM’s to chat board games, it’s been a great week!

Anyway a little bit about me for the 98 or so people who I have never met before. I live in the Uk and I am married to a very busy husband who does like to play games but also works super hard. I have 2 fabulous children who luckily like to play games and then during lockdown I discovered the great world of solo gaming which I have loved ever since as it was a great way to keep busy, occupy my mind which I find to be very therapeutic. I am fairly eclectic in my board game taste but my first game was Ticket to Ride and it still remains my husbands favourite game and it has so many great memories attached to it. The game that took me into this journey however was Arkham Horror LCG which I accidentally bought thinking it might be a Batman game I could play with my other half. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Well I was wrong but I loved how a set of cards could take you on an exciting journey just as good as any film and from there I jumped down the rabbit hole and never looked back.

So please save my husband and join me to chat about board games.

It would be great to get to know you. What’s your first game? Why do you love board games? Where are you from?

Fragments Solara from @coiledspringgames @iellogames
Gifted

👥1+
🧑‍🧒12+

Fragments Solara is a single chapter narrative jigsaw puzzle adventure. Set in the world of Solara, Larna is a nomad living in a world of sandy storms. While camping at the base of the Tower of Archives they lose something special and you must piece together the puzzle fragments to find what has been lost. The adventure book will set the scene and tell you which jigsaw pieces to start with. You then need to put them together to form pictures and complete various goals you find on them and in the book. For example, the book might tell you to find something or make something happen. The pieces themselves may say if a certain number of them are connected you can flip a piece or connect this to another piece to read a new chapter of the story and many more. You work through the adventure constantly changing the jigsaw or discovering new areas to explore until you are able to reach the end.

I was hugely excited for Fragments it felt unique in the world of one time story driven games and wow it did not disappoint! This was clever. I was constantly surprised at the different challenges that were presented. The use of the jigsaw pieces went beyond just manipulating the scene and were used in some interesting and innovative ways that made you feel like you were actually involved in the adventure. Completing the challenges that needed to be met by carefully looking for clues in the pictures and finding new ways to piece things together to achieve tasks was absorbing and I loved it. They included things like water the plants in the tutorial and find certain people within your camp in the main game as some basic introductions and grew in inventiveness as the game progressed. The challenges felt like they increased in difficulty and by the end I really needed to think about all I had seen and how to join various items together in different ways to reach a goal that needed multiple items and scene changes to reach its culmination. It’s beautiful and still has the relaxing sense of creating a jigsaw with the added challenge of an evolving story and puzzle and I loved how these parts married together. by @board_game_goode

LEGO: NINJAGO – Destiny’s Bounty Adventures from @asmodeeuk
Gifted @stripecom

🧑‍🧒8+

In Destiny’s Bounty Adventures players work together to defeat the serpent villains. Select a scenario from the 6 included. Each player selects a Ninja taking their box containing all their game pieces. Turns begin by drawing an event and include adding enemies and mastery tokens as well as moving enemies. When a villain reaches the end of their path they are added to the villain track. Next the player whose turn it is can move spaces equal to their Spinjizu Tornadoes starting with 2 and can be increased during the scenario. If a villain is encountered flip them face up and stop. Finally, the player may clear a room. If there are Mastery tokens you may collect and add them to the victory track. To defeat any villains, you must have Spinjizu Tornadoes plus any card effects, equal to or greater than the villains strength. Ninjas in adjacent rooms may join adding their Spinjizu’s strength. You can defeat multiple villains up to your strength total placing them on the victory track. To win you need to fill up the victory track to the Victory Marker placed during set up. You lose if the villains fill up their track.

This was tricky and players had to work hard together to beat each scenario. It was fabulous for developing teamwork skills, resilience as you fail and then determination as you set up and play again this time planning the best ways to level up you character to combo the best abilities between you so you can stay on top of the growing waves of enemies. I thought it was really enjoyable and a clever way to help players experience failure and teach commitment to try again. Levelling up the characters is fun as you select new abilities and build these onto your minifigures with Lego pieces which was a big hit. Each scenarios changes the gameplay just enough to keep you coming back and the game has a good arc as you start out feeling weak and the game piles on the pressure but just as things begin to feel overwhelming you gain power or abilities and the tide starts to turn and if you work together you can take back control and win which feels epic. by @board_game_goode

Miskatonic Tales: Journey to Innsmouth @chaosium_board_games
Gifted

👥1-4
🧑‍🧒13+

Miskatonic Tales: Journey to Innsmouth is a choose your own narrative adventure that takes place over 3 scenarios set in the Cthulhu world. Players form a team and work together to explore and discover the map, defeat enemies, find useful items and discover clues to keywords and items you need before ending the scenario. Most of the game is played out via the scenario storybook which contains the narrative and the actions/tests you can take to move forwards. To do this players have a hand of cards with various attributes they can play each round as well as character abilities. The scenario continues until players feel they have discovered enough and found an ending. Once ended players assess their success using the check list of items and keywords discovered in the scenario.

Before I talk about this I think it fair to say there are some issues with the rulebook and missing/repeated stuff in the storybook, but I was able to happily play through the whole box with a little extra work.

This games best feature is its ability to tell a wonderful story. The narrative is detailed and descriptive which creates an immersive thematic world packed with atmosphere and I loved it. It is a ton of reading but I found it was nicely broken up with the planning of which of the many actions/tests to take next and what the best use of all the cards was to ensure you could achieve as much as possible between the players each turn. The dual use cards for tests and actions and their ability to help out fellow players brought a nice layer of strategy and I enjoyed having to work together to puzzle out the best uses and combinations each round. There were unexpected twists to how the gameplay evolved between scenarios which was a nice way to spice things up and choices you made did affect the storyline as well as your choices between scenarios and there were multiple interesting paths available. This meant that after completing the 3 scenarios I felt drawn to start again to see what else I could find. Overall, the narrative world won out for me and I enjoyed exploring all it had to offer a lot. by @board_game_goode

Let me know what you favourite game played last week was?

It feels like a quiet week but I have spent many hours exploring the world of Miskatonic Tales. Journey to Innsmouth (gifted from @chaosium_board_games ). I am loving this choose your own narrative adventure. I am heading toward the last few sessions before I reach the end and while it will be nice to have some other games on my gaming table I will be sad for it to end. Although there is plenty I haven’t found in this one to warrant another run through.

We have also begun the epic task of keeping up with Celebrity Traitors so that takes up most of my free time in the evenings with my oldest. It’s such a great TV program! by @board_game_goode

Duel of Meloch from @stonemaiergames @jameystegmaier
Gifted

Duel of Meloch is a game of Scythe Vs Expeditions. There are a few small changes but mostly these games play the same as their originals. This is a standalone game but can also be mixed with content from the originals. In Duel of Meloch you are racing to be the first to place 4 stars on the triumph track. Only one player can claim a space and the track is double sided with different goals depending on the side you pick and the game you are playing. Each time a player places a star the other player gains a bonus by placing a Meloch card overlapping the previous and claiming all bonuses with an arrow facing them. The game plays out on the map and you can pick from 2 different layouts. Combat sees the biggest change with cards having abilities that trigger in combat and resource bonuses taken by discarding the card. To start a combat the expedition player takes a vanquish action or if the Scythe player ends movement with a mech/character in the same space as the Expeditions player and choses to begin combat. As soon as 1 player places their 4th star the game ends and that player is the winner.

These two games come together in a battle of strategy and speed. They cleverly intertwine in a race to be the first to collect stars. This makes you watch your opponent carefully ensuring you stay ahead with the resources needed for the stars you want to claim as well as thinking ahead planning for the ones your opponent seems to be lagging behind in so you can swoop in to claim them. The Meloch cards are an excellent way to balance out the game especially if one player quickly surges ahead with stars allowing the other player to collect multiple useful extra resources. I very much enjoyed the extra layer the new combat cards add. The abilities allow you to mess with your opponent’s plans in combat and the ability to discard them for resources means you can swoop in and speedily snatch a star away from under your opponent’s nose. I really enjoyed all the feels of the original games but in a much quicker package.

Overall, it is interactive, fast, intense and 100% a duel where every move matters. by @board_game_goode
