Duel of Meloch is a game of Scythe Vs Expeditions. There are a few small changes but mostly these games play the same as their originals. This is a standalone game but can also be mixed with content from the originals. In Duel of Meloch you are racing to be the first to place 4 stars on the triumph track. Only one player can claim a space and the track is double sided with different goals depending on the side you pick and the game you are playing. Each time a player places a star the other player gains a bonus by placing a Meloch card overlapping the previous and claiming all bonuses with an arrow facing them. The game plays out on the map and you can pick from 2 different layouts. Combat sees the biggest change with cards having abilities that trigger in combat and resource bonuses taken by discarding the card. To start a combat the expedition player takes a vanquish action or if the Scythe player ends movement with a mech/character in the same space as the Expeditions player and choses to begin combat. As soon as 1 player places their 4th star the game ends and that player is the winner.
These two games come together in a battle of strategy and speed. They cleverly intertwine in a race to be the first to collect stars. This makes you watch your opponent carefully ensuring you stay ahead with the resources needed for the stars you want to claim as well as thinking ahead planning for the ones your opponent seems to be lagging behind in so you can swoop in to claim them. The Meloch cards are an excellent way to balance out the game especially if one player quickly surges ahead with stars allowing the other player to collect multiple useful extra resources. I very much enjoyed the extra layer the new combat cards add. The abilities allow you to mess with your opponent’s plans in combat and the ability to discard them for resources means you can swoop in and speedily snatch a star away from under your opponent’s nose. I really enjoyed all the feels of the original games but in a much quicker package.
Overall, it is interactive, fast, intense and 100% a duel where every move matters.
