We played The Trial of the Forest tonight by Giancarlo Spinelli and it was a treat.

🌳🦌🐿️🏔️🌳🪏⛏️🦝🌳

I think this might be the game people think they are buying when they pick up Root. I love Root, but this is a cute of animals exploring and going on adventures. If you’ve wanted a very thematic set collection game with a fair amount of randomness and tableau building, then try out this delightful romp through the woods. Just be prepared for how so many parts of theme and mechanics work well together

We played another game of Trials of Maya tonight and now that we are getting past the rules learning curve we are really enjoying it. I got trounced, of course, but the game allowed me to almost come back via strategic choices without feeling like there was a catch up mechanism. It’s mechanically a well-designed game and we are looking forward to exploring more.

I have been entrusted with a sacred duty: to make beautiful pages, gather precious inks, and, most importantly, not disappoint the Abbot.

Inkwell from DVC Games puts you in the robes of a master illuminator at the Abbey of Iona. Gather colored inks, collect gold leaf, learn new techniques, and carefully fill your manuscript with glorious illustrations.

Of course, there’s a catch.

The Abbot is watching. 👀

Take too many supplies and time slips away. Wait too long to turn the page and you may find yourself scrambling to finish your masterpiece. Every choice feels simple… right up until you realize that everything matters.

It’s beautiful. It’s clever. It’s wonderfully tense. And yes, I have absolutely stared at a handful of colored cubes for far too long while contemplating the meaning of existence.

Inkwell is for 1–5 players, plays in about 30 minutes, and is a lovely little package of medieval manuscripts, tactical decisions, and just enough pressure from the Abbot to keep you humble.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a manuscript to finish.

And I do NOT want to hear that the Abbot is upset again.

Trials of Maya by @trialsofmaya is an epic dueling game we just received last week and are getting ready to review. Even the initial presentation was quite nice. The gameplay has been fairly intuitive and we like the card play. More to come soon! We played 14 different scenarios of Temple Twist tonight and had a ball. It’s a bit silly, but if you don’t cheat at the communication it makes for a fine co-op game that makes you think to solve the puzzles. #coopgames #boardgames #gamenight #letsplayagame by @boardagaingames
