Early voting starts *today* in NC!

“During the early voting period, voters may cast a ballot at any early voting site in their county. This is different than Election Day, when registered voters must vote at their assigned polling place. During the early voting period, eligible individuals may also register to vote and vote at the same time.”

In Memory of Florado Muybridge, 1-4. Some or all of these will be in a couple of shows this fall. First up: Kai Lin Art in Atlanta

16x20” kinegrams: cyanotypes on paper and screen prints on plexiglass

These are from a series that emerged from thinking about the strange life of Eadweard Muybridge. I’ve experimented with ways to bring Muybridge’s photographs to life again. Muybridge spent parts of 1884 to 1887 in Philadelphia, documenting the motion of animals sourced from UPenn’s vet school and the Philadelphia Zoo. He mostly photographed one animal at a time. Reflecting on tumultuous events in Muybridge’s life before this period (he shot & killed his wife’s suspected lover, and he abandoned their son Florado to an orphanage) and effects of his actions on people around him, I like to imagine his animals running amok, chasing each other, and escaping — so I collaged his animals together and set them in motion again.

Peel window #20. I borrowed this leg from Rembrandt (a 1646 etching) to replace the 1515 Durer rhino leg that had been there.

I was motivated to trace Rembrandt as a route to try to do a little time travel and think about his etching process and teaching... despite this having been made so long ago, in 1646, drawings by Rembrandt's students of the same scene from a variety of angles make it possible to reconstruct a semi-circular seating chart, according to descriptions from recent auctions. I love the loops down the side of the calf, which suggest to me that Rembrandt was scribing some of the shading on his copper plate hastily. Embryo of a roundworm, a screen printed and watercolored collaboration with Theodor Boveri (1862-1915). Boveri published these lithographs in an 1899 paper reporting what these embryos look like as they develop. The lithographs in the publication have such fine detail that the drawings just about exceed the level of detail possible to even *see* in the cells using a light microscope. So they’re well suited to scan, make much bigger, screen print, and then color in. I did this before but tried to match Boveri’s restrained color palette previously. This time I went for more colorful & fun. I trust Boveri won’t mind.

To learn more about how lithographs were made based on scientists’ drawings back then, search up Beatrice Steinert, lithography, embryos. She’s done some wonderful research & writing on the topic ( @b_steinert ).

Happy 555th birthday to Albrecht Dürer, who wouldn’t let not-having-ever-seen-a-rhinoceros-himself get in his way. And thanks for lending this poor guy a leg.

Dürer’s famous 1515 woodcut was small (less than 10x12”), which makes me wonder now why he (or his assistants) decided to carve in a way that seems so true in super fine detail to drawn lines. A close-up of his print looks much more like a drawing than a woodcut to me, despite being one of the archetypical fine art woodcuts. I’d love to time-travel to see how that happened… he had his own press & workshop with assistants to do the carving, so I’m naively guessing that instructing assistants to carve based on his drawing resulted in precise carving that hides the technique, i.e. the woodcut was mostly done to produce a sellable multiple of a drawing as opposed to making something that feels like a woodcut. If anyone knows more….

Another set of screen printed posters went to UNC’s University Archives this week, including one I made & distributed (at UNC and beyond) in the immediate wake of the Supreme Court’s Students for Fair Admissions, Inc vs UNC & Harvard 2023 decision. That decision included some clear language about ways that race can still be considered in admissions — words that universities were soon pressured to ignore, at least during the current administration.

I’m so grateful that university archives & museums can serve as homes even for work that’s critical of actions by those universities. Search online for Nancy Hopkins’ tape measure for a great example in MIT’s history collection.

While there to drop these off, I visited the A to Z exhibit from Special Collections and saw a huge, 16” diameter Bob Wills record, a 1978 Micael Priest poster from Austin’s old Armadillo World Headquarters, an 1800s non-Braille book with embossed text for blind readers, and a 1662 human physiology book by Descartes (made with liftable flaps!) published only after his death so that he wouldn’t risk punishment from the Catholic Church. To see the show, enter Wilson Library and walk through the lobby and up one floor.

Oh what fun these naked guys have!

How do you do? 5 hands, 3 feet.

Thanks @lindsaymetivier for continuing to let me surprise you with a new leg now and then for Michael Brown’s marathon runners mural on the side of @peel_gallery and thanks Michael for your blessing. These are sometimes screen prints on glass, sometimes cut vinyl, sometimes hand painting.

Peel is such a vibrant hub of the art scene around here. Go to one of their openings to experience it (there are great openings in Carrboro tomorrow @peel_gallery @attic506 and @artscenterlive ) and spend money there for a way to support a local small business AND bring home cool stuff. People who build community deserve so much support… thanks @lindsaymetivier @snotbody and others at Peel! taken in Peel by @bob__goldstein

Printmaking & Biology course is back! Fall term at UNC Chapel Hill. 7 slots for science majors, 7 for studio art majors. Almost all of the science learning in this course is customized to each student’s own interests & studio art projects — for both the science and the art, we meet you where you’re at! Students can contact me and/or Beth Grabowski for info and for the required ‘permission of instructors’ to register.

This will be the 9th year we’ve taught this course. When we started, I imagined students making biology beautiful. What we get is generally so much more interesting — students make art about topics that they’re passionate about, incorporating science in ways that help them avoid revisiting the lowest hanging fruits again & again. We’re surprised every year by where they go with the art!
