A little snapshot from my last private safari of the season in the Lamai Wedge, Northern Serengeti.

From playful lions and cheetahs on the move to a dramatic wildebeest crossing and some lovely elephant encounters, we had a great few days out in the bush.

It was a lovely way to finish the season, sharing these moments with my guests and enjoying everything the Northern Serengeti had to offer.

I run private safaris throughout the year, personally guiding my guests and tailoring each trip to their interests. If you’re thinking about an African safari of your own, feel free to get in touch.

Received this photo today from Thom and Femke, a couple from the Netherlands who we met out at Deadvlei in Namibia. They took my details and kindly sent me this photo of the Honey Badgers and I in action.

Four women, a bunch of cameras and not afraid to get down and dirty for the shot! 😂

Love this! Thanks Thom and Femke for sending it through. ❤️ taken in Deadvlei, Sossusvlei Namibia by @bobbyjosafaris

An unusual sighting along the river this morning.

The Honey Badgers and I watched a young leopardess stalking an injured zebra. She followed closely for quite some time, but seemed unsure about whether to make a move.

Despite its injury, the young zebra was more than capable of holding its own and kept the leopardess at bay.

Eventually, she decided it wasn’t worth the effort and gave up.

One of those fascinating predator and prey encounters where you really have no idea how it’s going to play out.

Sri Lanka has a little bit of everything.

Colour, culture, beautiful wildlife and those unexpected moments that make you stop and just watch.

From elephants by the water and leopards moving through the forest, to colourful celebrations and some seriously impressive birdlife, Sri Lanka is a wonderful place to explore with a camera.

I’m heading back in June 2027 with a small group of photographers and wildlife lovers, and there are still places available.

If Sri Lanka has been sitting on your safari wish list, perhaps it’s time to come and see it with me.

Send me a message if you would like to join me.

A week off safaris in Kenya has given me the chance to slow down a little and spend time with some very special people.

I started my week in Nanyuki, where I had the absolute honour of spending time with legendary bongo conservationist and founder of the Bongo Surveillance Project, now the @mountainbongoproject Mike Prettejohn.

It was wonderful to catch up with Mike at his home, hear some of his stories and spend time talking about one of Africa’s most endangered antelope, the mountain bongo.

From Mike’s home, we headed into the Aberdares National Park to visit the bongo treehouse and catch up with Josephat and Boniface from the Mountain Bongo Project. I first met these two men on my last visit in late 2024, and during that visit I was also lucky enough to photograph a wild mountain bongo.

After that visit, the Dubbo community and Bobby-Jo Safaris raised funds to help renovate the bongo treehouse, so returning this time and seeing the finished work was pretty special.

The renovations include a new roof, windows, a water tank and even a toilet. What might seem like relatively simple things make a huge difference to the people spending time up here protecting these animals.

It was a wonderful day in the Aberdares and a really lovely reminder of what can happen when a group of people come together to support something they care about.

A huge thank you to my friends Shauna and Sophy for taking me up there, and to everyone back home in Dubbo who helped make the treehouse renovations possible.

It was very special to come back and see the difference.

What happens when you spend time in Sri Lanka with someone who has been obsessed with leopards for more than 40 years?

I sat down with my friend and guide Mevan Piyasena on the edge of the Indian Ocean in Kumana National Park to talk leopards, photography and some of the incredible encounters we had during my time in Sri Lanka.

After seeing 10 leopards in Yala and another six or seven in Kumana, there was plenty to talk about.

In this episode of Safari Life with Bobby Jo, Mevan introduces us to Sankani, a mother leopard with two very bold cubs, Gamunu, a notorious tusker who has perfected the art of ambushing vehicles for food, and a particularly nasty male leopard who moved into the area and promptly chased away six other leopards.

We also talk about the leopard encounter that still gets Mevan's heart racing after thousands of sightings, why he thinks Sri Lankan leopards are the prettiest in the world, and that split second moment that can turn an ordinary photograph into one you'll never forget.

If Sri Lanka and its wildlife have been on your radar, have a listen. It might just give you a taste of what's waiting out there.

And if you'd like to experience it for yourself, I'm taking a small group to Sri Lanka in June 2027.

Listen to the latest episode of Safari Life with Bobby Jo wherever you get your podcasts.

I’ve just wrapped up a private safari through Namibia, and looking back through the images, I’m reminded of just how much there is to photograph in this extraordinary country.

From desert adapted elephants and rhino to oryx, giraffe, zebra and some of Namibia’s smaller and more unusual wildlife, every day brought something completely different. Then there were the landscapes. Vast open plains, dramatic mountains, towering dunes and those enormous skies that make you feel very small.

And of course, some of my favourite moments were simply being out there with a camera, finding compositions in a landscape that seems to go on forever.

This trip was a private safari, planned around the interests of my guests and the kind of wildlife and photography experiences they wanted from Namibia. I also run small group photography safaris, and I’m now taking expressions of interest for a Namibia photo safari in 2028.

If Namibia has been sitting on your wish list, or you’d love to experience it with a small group of like minded photographers, send me a message and I can put you on the list for more information as the 2028 trip takes shape.

Namibia really is a photographer’s playground.

Sometimes travel gives you the most unexpected little moments.

While in Swakopmund, Namibia, I spotted a cafe called @bojoscafe . Now, Bojo has been my nickname for years. Some of my old workmates started calling me Bojo, and eventually a very close friend shortened it to Boj. It has stuck ever since. So obviously, when I saw Bojos Cafe, I had to take the Honey Badgers there for a morning coffee.

I told the staff the story behind my nickname, and then came the surprise. The owner is a wonderful woman called Bobby Jo. Same name, same spelling, just without the hyphen. I honestly don’t think I have ever met another Bobby Jo in my life, let alone stumbled across one completely by chance in Namibia.

We got chatting and within minutes it felt like we’d known each other forever. She was warm, funny, kind and just one of those people you instantly connect with.

Sometimes you meet someone while travelling and it just feels like you were meant to cross paths. Finding another Bobby Jo in a little cafe in Swakopmund was one of those moments for me.

A very unexpected connection in Namibia, and one I won’t forget.

67 kilometres.

That is how far we followed the tracks of three desert adapted lions through Namibia’s wild Hoanib Valley.

The Hoanib is one of the most extraordinary landscapes I have ever experienced. Vast, rugged and incredibly remote, with huge stretches of terrain that look more like the surface of the moon than somewhere on Earth.

Yet this is home to elephants, giraffe, oryx and one of Africa’s most remarkable lion populations.

There are currently only five lions in the Hoanib, and these animals face enormous challenges, including conflict with livestock owners. They had not been seen for an entire month.

On our first morning, we found fresh tracks belonging to three lions.

So we followed.

And followed.

And followed.

For hours we traced their movements across this seemingly endless landscape. I still cannot comprehend how these animals had walked more than 67 kilometres overnight.

The tracking was exhilarating. There was something incredibly special about trying to piece together their journey from nothing more than footprints in the sand.

And then, after all those kilometres, we finally found them.

One of my favourite moments and photographs from my time in Madikwe.

The Brown Hyena is one of my favourite species, and when our guide Jonny managed to find this beautiful, shy female near a den site, we were incredibly lucky to be able to spend some time with her.

My fascination with this species began many years ago after reading Cry of the Kalahari by Mark and Delia Owens, who spent years in the Kalahari researching Brown Hyenas. My passion for them also comes from my friends and the owners of Mosetlha Bush Camp, Caroline and her team, who introduced me to Harry, a resident Brown Hyena who lived around the camp.

I will never forget sitting down and having Harry sit with me just metres away. It was one of those incredibly special wildlife encounters that stays with you.

Harry eventually passed away at a very old age, but his spirit lives on at Mosetlha through Caroline’s stories and memories of him.

Brown Hyenas really are an incredible species, and this might just be my favourite photograph of one.

I have now arrived in Namibia, where today we kick off our safari in Etosha National Park.

One week in Madikwe was incredible, and I am already looking forward to returning. I am also planning something very special there for 2027, a conservation focused safari that I hope will give guests the opportunity to experience this remarkable wilderness in a very different way.

Stay tuned for details. taken in Mosetlha Bush Camp & Eco Lodge by @bobbyjosafaris
