Title: When The Wolf Comes Home

I don’t know why, but sometimes I have a harder time visualizing characters and scenes in novels, this was NOT one of those novels. 😂 I had no problem visualizing everything that was going on, and I think this story would work really well as a movie. I was getting a Stranger Things kind of vibe from the kid, and I liked how the author wrote some of his dialogue how an actual 5 year old would say it.

It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, there are minimal scenes with wolves 😂 But once I started I couldn’t stop. There were so many twists and turns, especially near the end. Just when you think you have it figured out, it does a 180 and leaves your jaw on the floor.

This was my first Joe Hill read, and I have to say the Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I liked the characters, they were all believable and unique. (Minus the girls all having States as names 😂) It might just be me being an old man, but I like when the main character isn’t an 18 year old kid. 😂 Judas is a bit of an asshole at times, but he’s still a good guy deep down. I liked the heavy metal music references, and as someone who named his dog after a rockstar, I salute you Judas Coyne.🤘

It was an interesting concept, that took some unexpected turns along the way. It was creepy, paranormal, and mysterious. Honestly, pretty much the recipe for me to enjoy a book. 👍

RAGE - (163 pages) Written in 1965-1966, published in 1977, this book depicts violence that has become all too familiar these days. Stephen King pulled this novel from publication after it was linked to some school shootings in the 1980’s and 1990’s. A student holds his high school algebra class hostage, and the student hostages are sympathetic towards their captor. Lots of teen angst, power struggles, and authority complexes.

THE LONG WALK - (255 pages) 100 teenage boys walk until they physically can’t anymore, the last one standing is granted anything they wish for. The rest of the country watches them, places bets on who they think will win, and cheers every time someone fails.

ROADWORK - (263 pages) My least favourite, although the character work is still top notch. A man’s life unravels when he finds out the city wants to demolish his home and workplace to build a highway extension. He spirals down a path of self destruction, gets mixed up with some shady characters that do not help his situation. Slow burn, character driven,

THE RUNNING MAN - (212 pages) Probably my favourite out of this collection. A man enters a television game show where hitman are hunting him down. Ordinary citizens can also win big prizes for turning the contestants in. The longer he lasts the more money he makes for his family. Set in a dystopian America in the year 2025, pollution makes it extremely dangerous to breathe, only the wealthy have the money to buy nose filters which protects them from the smog. The government manipulates people through the media, and every household is required to have a Free-Vee tuned in.

Title: The Long Walk

Not the craziest plot in this novel. A group of 100 teenage boys walk at a 4mph pace until they can’t anymore, at which point they are shot. ☠️ They eat, sleep, go to the washroom 💩, all while keeping the pace. Mile after mile, through the heat of the day, through the rain, and the darkness of night. They keep putting one foot in front of the other, while the country watches and places bets on who they think will come out as the winner. Suffering and putting their lives on the line just for the entertainment of others.

While it kept my attention enough to finish, it’s definitely not my favourite King novel. It’s pretty clear right from the beginning there can only be one winner. But I was curious to who it would be, and how they would do it. However, I was kind of hoping for a bit more information as to why they were doing it. You can definitely tell it was written by a 19 year old. The characters are all teenage boys, so I feel he captured that very well. If you aren’t a fan of endings left up to your interpretation, you might put this one down feeling unsatisfied.

The longest walk I think I’ve done personally is around 30km (18.64 miles), the boys in this story are estimated to have walked anywhere from 300 to 500 miles. How long would you last in a competition like this ? What’s the longest walk you’ve done ?

In the words of Quasar, “Holy tiddy nipples!” 😳 What a ride it has been so far. It’s a bittersweet moment, on one hand I’m happy that I’m all caught up in the series. On the other, I now have to wait for the rest of the books to release. 🥲

High-octane Racing. All Gas, No Brakes. A demolition derby for your mind. You might think you know what’s going to happen, but you don’t. Nobody is safe. You’re left with no choice but to agree with the AI and say “What the actual fuck, Carl ?”

With how this book ended, I am very curious to what direction the next book is going to take. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long 🤞

First of all..if you listened to the audiobook..there’s something I want to talk aboot..WE DO NOT TALK LIKE THAT, EH ! 🇨🇦😂

FINALLY !! The much anticipated Faction Wars !! You lose, you die. No pressure 😳 There was definitely a militaristic feel throughout a lot of this book. Very strategy driven, with different characters being assigned ranks and roles. Warlord Donut and the Princess Posse face a variety of enemy types, each with different strengths and weaknesses.

One of my favourite parts of this book, I won’t say too much about them, but I really liked the introduction of the new allies, that really added a sense of brother/sisterhood. Is it just me, or is Donut’s trash talking levelling up along with her. 😂

There’s also a bit of important history dropped in here. A look into Katia’s past, which gives some insight into why she may or may not have made certain decisions. The AI drops a bomb on Carl, and we find out some very important information about the true reason behind the crawl.

With every book I read in this series it’s becoming harder to say what my favourite is. This floor had a combat system I was not expecting. Reminiscent of Pokémon card battles, and in Carl’s own words “It felt more like a half-assed Yu-Gi-Oh! rip-off duct-taped together by someone on an Adderall bender.” 😂

Matt Dinniman has one hell of an imagination to come up with all these characters. This book had a few that made me straight up laugh out loud, and I hope they make it into the next books. It was hilarious finding out what the “I need a baby seal” on the cover means. 😂

Once again, the epilogue dropped a bomb that has me wanting to start the next book immediately. Luckily I have it on my shelf 👍 It’s going to suck when I get to the last book and have to wait for number 9. 😂

“Carl, make them suffer.”

Another SOLID entry in the series. Fast paced right from the start. Probably the darkest, goriest, book so far. There are some big changes with the show runners, but Carl is still messing with them every chance he gets. It’s kind of a damned if they do/damned if they don’t situation, Carl is a (and has been for awhile now) a top 10 crawler, they can’t get rid of him because everyone loves watching him, but he is actively trying to bring them down. You will not break me. I will break you all.

The ending was insanely action packed. I may have stayed up way too late to finish this (worth it). I must say, I do feel lucky that I can pick the next book up immediately, because these epilogues drop some crazy bombs. 😳🔥

P.S - Apparently the band is called “Sweet” Carl 👍

This floor had a very different set up, completely separating the crawlers into smaller groups, and having them work together to complete their objectives. From the sky to the bottom of the ocean, when Carl, Donut, Mordecai, and Katia, put their minds together, it seems like there is nothing they can’t accomplish.

Also, things inside and outside the dungeon are getting very interesting. Some people want Carl to fail. Some very clearly want him to win. Delivering emergency loot boxes, the most expensive in the dungeons history. The AI seems to be developing more and more fetishes involving Carl. 😂 Don’t even get me started on that Epilogue !! 🔥😳 I can’t wait to dive into the next book !!

There is a message in the beginning of this book from Matt Dinniman, about the 4th floor being set up as a deliberately confusing puzzle for the crawlers, and not to worry too much about the train and station numbers. This definitely helped, because it does get really confusing trying to remember who is on what train at what station.

With that being said, it was really cool to see the groups of crawlers working together. Sharing information they were discovering in the group chat, trying to figure out how to navigate the Iron Tangle.
