Big decisions were made today. Gonna miss the rage.

Two steps back, three steps forward. That’s the game right now.

No ride today. Between the ongoing neck injury and my lower back with sciatica flaring up, the body made that decision pretty clear this morning.

Learning to recognize the difference between injury and weakness is just as important as knowing when to push. Today isn’t about getting miles in just to say I did. It’s about recovering so I can keep showing up for the long haul.

That’s what @projectechelonracing continues to reinforce: progress isn’t always measured in miles, watts, or time. Sometimes it’s knowing when to back off so you can come back stronger.

Taking the day off. Playing the long game.

Two steps back, three steps forward. 🚲🇺🇸

Push through the pain. Respect the recovery.

An intense interval session today that brought on some pain, but not further injury (doc and surgeon said riding is fine if I can tolerate the pain). Knowing the difference between the two is important, and knowing how to recover properly so you can show up and do it again tomorrow is even more important.

A 40° cold plunge when it's 45° and raining outside (had to dig deep for that one), followed by the Hyperice Venom, Normatec, TENS unit, and some much-needed rest.

Putting in the work is only half the equation. Recovery is what allows you to keep showing up.

The objective hasn't changed. Just adapting to the route.

Sometimes the hardest part of moving toward your objective is knowing when to execute a shift fire or move to your secondary route plan.

Yesterday’s hospital visit gave me more clarity on what’s happening in my neck. C5, C6, and C7 are all part of the picture, and right now that means pain, limitations, and—probably the hardest part for me—having to slow down long enough to let my body heal.

That’s MUCH easier said than done.

In cycling, the military, and life, we usually have a main objective. But the route to get there changes. Sub-objectives change. Targets change. Sometimes the original plan simply isn’t possible anymore.

You adjust. You bend—but you don’t break.

That’s also what @projectechelonracing is. It isn’t just riding bikes or pushing yourself through endurance sports. It’s the community around you—the people who show up when you’re hurting, when the plan changes, and when moving forward looks a lot different than you expected.

Right now, most of the plan has shifted, but the objective hasn’t.

The good days matter more because the bad days are real.

A couple days ago, I had one of my best rides up Lookout Mountain — strong power, strong time, and a day where my neck and back actually let me push.

Today, I’m in the ER dealing with severe pain through my neck, shoulder, arm, and chest.

That’s the reality right now. Some days I can climb a mountain. Some days just getting through the day is the win.

@projectechelonracing has taught me to keep moving forward, adapt when I need to, and take advantage of every good day when it comes.

Good days. Bad days. Keep moving.

Quick injury update.

My back is still dealing with old L1–L2 fractures, an L4–L5 disc bulge with an annular tear, spinal stenosis, and nerve-related pain through both legs.

Now the neck is becoming the bigger issue. I’ve got cervical degeneration with significant nerve symptoms running through my left shoulder, arm, and into my fingers. The pain can get severe, especially with certain neck movements, and it’s been affecting sleep, training, and normal day-to-day movement.

So right now, the approach is simple: adjust the training, manage the pain, keep working, and keep moving. Some days are much easier, and some days are far worse.

That’s also a big part of what @projectechelonracing represents to me. Progress doesn’t always look like going faster or farther. Sometimes it’s adapting to where you are, staying connected to the mission, and continuing to show up.

The goal hasn’t changed. The way I get there might have to.

Keep moving forward. 🇺🇸🚲

Gonna take a page out of @the.analog.cyclist and stop really worrying about what my numbers are on my weekend rides and just enjoy them. Today became an amazing ride that started with a bagel that might have had 3 pounds of cream cheese on it at @leroysbagels (making them now a top 3 bagel shop for me) then rode out and up Lookout for some liquid intake at @etvoilafrenchbakery and then back home.

During the ride I took the time to actually pick my head up away from my bike computer and took in what was around me. I am working towards having more gratitude for where I am riding and that I can ride.

Looking forward to more of this mindset and input into my weekends.

Solid 80km ride in the books! Today was the first time in a while that I was actually attacking up Lookout rather than just suffering through it. Ready for some pasta tonight!

Took some time off from social media to reset my outlook and attitude. I felt myself slipping into a place that wasn’t good for me or for the people closest to me. Stepping back gave me the space to rebuild my perspective and set a few non‑negotiables for how I move forward:

1. Your effort towards me = my effort towards you.
2. My time is my greatest asset. I won’t spend it on anything or anyone that doesn’t build me or us.
3. My bike is where I find my peace, not my comparison.
4. Rosemary and my inner circle are the only ones who influence my focus and emotions.

And next season, I’m racing again. I miss it and I know it’s what leveled me out, grounded me, and lifted me to a place in the past that I am ready to return to. by @bogusbikes
