Who’s actually living in your mind?

Parents, old friends, teachers, managers, colleagues, even strangers whose opinions somehow took up permanent residence. It becomes difficult to know what living life on your own terms actually looks like when so many other voices are still in the room, quietly shaping decisions long after they should have any say.

This month in the Becoming Circle, we’re exploring how to better recognise your own voice, and how to notice when what you’re hearing isn’t actually yours. We’ll look honestly at who genuinely holds influence over your choices, and how much of that influence is real versus inherited from somewhere, or someone else.

It’s also worth sitting with this: your intuition has likely grown sharper since these voices first moved in. You may be more equipped than you think to find safe people, build a way of working that suits you, and make clear decisions for yourself based on what you actually want.

Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is issue an eviction notice.

Responses about May’s session to the question what resonated most?, and the responses reminded me why this space matters.

The relief of realising you’re not alone in something you thought was yours to carry quietly. The discomfort of having an old belief disrupted. The quiet recognition that we rarely make time to celebrate what we’ve already built, because we’re too busy doing more.

Swipe through to hear it in their own words.

If any of this is connecting with you, June’s session: Who’s living in your mind? is open for registration. Link in bio.

Aligned doesn’t mean easy. Well it hasn’t been in my experience, and it’s not what I hear from the people I work with either.

You know the direction is right not because there’s no friction, but because the friction feels worth it.

What’s one decision you’ve been avoiding that you already know the answer to?

Today the first cohort of the year from @bridges.academy graduates, and I had the honour of facilitating their Career Growth module.

I’ve loved laying the foundations for building a long-term career in the music and creative industry with them. We had honest conversations about the realities of this industry, and the small ways you move forward to create the big moments.

I spent the last while working through their assignments, which were really well done. But what’s stayed with me is the role grades play. The most valuable part of assessing their work, I think, is the detailed feedback that helps them apply the learning going forward, especially knowing the weight a number can carry, and how it makes you feel.

I’m so grateful to Savannah and Prashana for trusting me to be part of the team and nurture the growth of these co-creators. The whole team helped create a great learning environment, especially Olwethu Singama.

Congratulations to the @bridgesformusic Co-Creators on this achievement! Looking forward to seeing your names out there in the world more and more ♥️ by @boldbeingscoach

We’ve been sold a particular story about growth.

That it requires pressure. That the inner critic is useful. That if you’re kind to yourself, you’ll go soft.

I’ve watched this play out in coaching sessions many times. Someone achieves something significant, a promotion, a project, a transition they’ve been working towards for months, and before they’ve drawn breath, they’re already cataloguing what wasn’t good enough.

The growth is real. But it doesn’t land. Because the foundation it’s built on is criticism, not care.

Here’s what I’ve come to understand: sustainable growth depends on the quality of your self-regard. Not as a nice-to-have. As the actual substrate.

You can pressure yourself into short-term performance. But you can’t pressure yourself into becoming.

The professionals I work with who make the most lasting change are the ones who learn to take action from a place of self-respect, who commit to their growth because they believe they deserve it, not because they’re afraid of what happens if they don’t.

What would shift for you if you approached your next goal from that place? by @boldbeingscoach

Just realised I’ve had a week of highlights.

Starting with celebrations for 10 years of the d-School Afrika where a work as a Design Thinking Coach… here I am celebrating on style with one of my colleagues @olwethu_kwayiba @dschoolatuct
@twogirlsstrong being invited to be part of Expresso’s Pride program, which led to special moments of gratitude with my family and other loved elders
Facilitating a powerful last session of the Career Growth Module at @bridges.academy
And a great meeting with the Russel Botman Bursary Committee discussing our recipients for 2026

As an independent consultant, I’ve become friends with uncertainty and being part of many different projects simultaneously (sometimes requiring a lot of effort to keep my head on straight), so I think it’s necessary for a moment of pause to acknowledge this week full of joyful highlights. by @boldbeingscoach

What are you still trying to prove and to whom?

Many of us know what it is to work harder than the role requires, not because the work demands it, but because some part of us is still trying to earn our place. To stay visible enough, useful enough, impressive enough.

The upcoming Bold Beings Becoming Circle explores the quiet exhaustion of constant self-justification, in our careers, our friendships, our families; and asks what it might look like to simply occupy the space we are already in. To show up as we are, rather than as we think we need to be to be kept.

If this is speaking to you, you are welcome to join the conversation.

So much of what we call discipline is actually fear in disguise.

The pressure to show up, produce, and prove, not because we are committed to something meaningful, but because we are afraid of what it means about us if we don’t. And for many of us, that fear was installed long before we were old enough to question it.

What I keep returning to is this: the most disciplined thing you can do is learn the conditions under which you actually flourish, and honour them without apology. Rest, when rest is what restores you, is not the opposite of discipline. It might be the whole point.

Showing up for yourself from a place of care rather than punishment changes not just what you do, but what you are able to sustain.

That is the practice.

Some clients come in having learned to leave themselves at the door.

In our work together, this client, creative storyteller and talented accountant, had been living what I can only describe as a Severance existence: stepping into their professional life almost entirely disconnected from who they are. The competence was always there. But sometimes their confidence didn’t step into the room with them.

What unfolded over our time together was “a quiet revolution” - their words, and I couldn’t have chosen better ones. A reclaiming of wholeness. A shift from surviving on hyper-independence to building from abundance. And a rediscovery of themselves, fully, across every area of their life.

This client impacted me deeply as a coach. Witnessing this kind of transformation, the kind that is felt before it is spoken, is exactly why I do this work.

If you’re standing at a pivot point and ready to be seen, fully: Bold Beings may be the space for you. Book your free 15-minute clarity call today.

The old story came back last week. The old familiar limiting belief.

I won’t tell you I was surprised. I’ve been at this long enough to know that inner work doesn’t operate on a straight line. You do the reflection. You name the pattern. You replace the old narrative with something truer. And then, sometimes weeks later, sometimes years, it surfaces again.

I used to read this as failure or feel deep frustration.

Now I understand it differently. Growth isn’t linear - it’s a returning. Like a spiral that comes back to the same point, but at a higher elevation. You’re not starting over. You’re visiting the same territory with more experience, more tools, more self-knowledge than you had last time.

Each time you recognise an old pattern and choose differently, even slightly, you are becoming incrementally more capable of doing so. That’s not regression. That’s the actual work.

If something you thought you’d dealt with has resurfaced: you haven’t failed. You’re being given another opportunity to practise. And this time, you know more than you did. by @boldbeingscoach

Marina won a full Bold Beings Coaching program through the My Year Challenge in 2025. And watching her move through that year as something of a witness, it was clear it was a year of letting go. Of releasing what had held her back and preparing for the transformation that was waiting.

What has unfolded since has been a quiet joy to witness. Marina is living in alignment, creating a life on her own terms, with courage, presence, and intention.
Her words say it better than I can.

If something in you is whispering that it’s time, for change, for clarity, for a life that actually feels like yours, trust it. That whisper matters.
