I was listening to Keke Palmer’s Ted Talk the other day. She talked about how, as an actor, she performs on stage, on screen, and sometimes even in everyday life.

It reinforced an idea I’ve been preaching about.

We’re all acting.

Not in the sense that we’re fake, but in the sense that every one of us is shaping an identity and rehearsing it daily. That’s the essence of personal branding. Over time, people come to know us by the role we consistently play. The confident one. The funny one. The quiet one. The intellectual. The one who always has the answers.

Awareness, however, is only the beginning.

The more important question is whether you’ve chosen your character or simply inherited it.

I find it interesting that one of the first things we create when building a product is a user persona. Before designing features or writing copy, we ask: Who is this product? How should people experience it? What should it consistently communicate?

We apply that level of intentionality to products, yet many of us drift into adulthood without ever asking the same questions of ourselves.

The character you choose eventually becomes the person people experience.

And that matters because identity is contagious.

Your standards become someone else’s benchmark.

Your habits give others permission to adopt theirs.

Your attitude quietly shapes the atmosphere in your home, your team and your friendships.

Whether you realize it or not, people are constantly taking cues from the way you live.

So if we’re all actors, the goal isn’t to stop performing.

The goal is to become the kind of character whose influence is worth inheriting.

Choose wisdom over applause.

Integrity over image.

Generosity over recognition.

Excellence over attention.

Build a character that makes people think better, love better and live better simply because they encountered you.

Eventually, the performance becomes character.

And character has a way of outliving the actor. by @boma.douglas
